From a low, tilted angle at the horse's eye level, looking up, the armored girl fills the left two-thirds of the frame as a long, dark mass of steel and horseflesh, her lance cutting a diagonal from her lower right hand across the sky toward the upper left. Her brown bob cut sits snug under a rounded steel helm with the visor raised; the blunt ends of the bob are blown sideways off her cheek by the headwind, one strand crossing the bridge of her nose. Her glowing eyes are the one warm source in the frame — pale amber light spilling from each iris, catching the inner rim of her helmet and casting a faint tint on the steel cheekplate below. She wears polished plate over navy blue wool: pauldrons, rerebraces, a breastplate with a seam of rivets down the center, gauntlets gripping the lance shaft just forward of the vamplate. Her weight shifts onto the near stirrup, right hip forward, booted foot jammed home in the stirrup iron, left hand gathered low on the reins against the horse's neck.
The horse's neck and shoulder rise steeply from the lower right, a dark bay coat with mane whipped across the near side of its face; its near ear is pinned back, near eye wide and rolling toward the camera's right, hooves kicking loose pale dust that hangs suspended against the near-ground. The lance's crimson pennon streams off the upper-left tip, edge frayed and whipping back over itself toward her shoulder.
Light comes from a low, flat, overcast sky to the right; it lays a broad sheen along the right edges of her pauldron and the horse's crest, and leaves the left side of her face in flat shadow broken only by the amber eye-glow. The ground is churned dirt with wheel ruts and a scatter of small stones; behind, a midground ridge and a distant line of spearheads and torn banners rendered small and simple, fading into cold gray haze. Dust kicked by the hooves catches the light so the wind direction reads from it. Palette is steel-gray, deep navy and cold pale sky, the crimson pennon and amber eye-glow as the only saturated notes. Tense, heroic.
