A vertical upper-body portrait of one bishounen young man against a completely empty, seamless pure-white field -- no wall line, no horizon, no prop of any kind, the white running unbroken from the top edge to the bottom of the crop. He is framed from mid-chest up and stands turned very slightly off square, his left shoulder a little nearer the lens than his right; his weight rides on the right leg, the hip lifted on that side, so the black jacket hangs higher on his left and his collar sits off-centre. Short black hair, cut close at the nape and at the sides, falls forward in separate pointed strands that drop between his eyes and rest on the bridge of his nose; the tips of those strands lift and part in a faint draught. Beneath them, bright yellow eyes look straight into the lens, calm and steady and slightly amused, the lids heavy-lashed, the long lashes tipping downward at the outer corners so a hairline of shadow prints under each eye. His lips are parted a finger's width, the lower lip fuller and catching a wet highlight, and the open line of his mouth shows a sliver of the dark behind it; the jaw is narrow, the chin soft. His right hand is raised to just beside his temple, palm turned in toward the cheek and fingers loosely curled, none of them touching his face -- the long tapered fingernails of all four fingers catch the light along their edges, the index nail bright, and the hand casts a small soft shadow across his right cheekbone and temple. He wears a black turtleneck sweater whose collar rises to the jaw and folds once at the throat, the ribbed knit stretched slightly over the collarbone; over it a black jacket, open and unzipped, the zip pull hanging free at the sternum as a small metal point, the jacket's grain coarser and duller than the fine knit beneath it. Round the ears, small earrings sit in both lobes and their metal returns one bright pinpoint of light each. The light comes from a single soft key at upper left: it lights the left plane of his forehead, the bridge of his nose, the raised fingernails and the left side of the turtleneck collar, and lays a shallow shadow under the chin, down the right cheek and inside the jacket's open edge, with a thin cooler rim along the right side of his jaw and hair; the pure white ground receives a faint smear of shadow from his shoulder, the only mark in it. The palette is held to three values -- black hair and knit, the slightly cooler black of the jacket, the bare white field -- struck through by the two yellow lights of his eyes and the silver of the earrings. Glossy cel shading with clean hard edge-light, quiet, effortlessly composed.
