From a low three-quarter angle, a solitary alien quadruped creature strides forward across a flat shelf of dark fractured slate. Its wedge-shaped, sharply faceted head angles slightly downward along its path of motion; the entire facial plane is a smooth, unbroken expanse of polished brown carapace completely devoid of eyes, ocular slits, or sockets, and the lateral planes of the cranium remain entirely earless and unpierced, transitioning seamlessly into the thick plates of the neck. The creature's anatomy is lean yet densely corded with muscle, encased in an interlocking exoskeleton of brown stone-like plates that possess a sleek, polished surface texture. It walks deliberately on four elongated, muscular legs; its front left limb is planted firmly onto the rock, bearing its shifting weight, while its rear right leg extends backward in mid-step with its tapered digits lightly leaving the ground. Where the lead forelimb presses against the bedrock, fine mineral dust scatters radially across the dark stone. Nightmare’s head resembles a vaguely humanoid silhouette, though its exact shape seems to subtly change whenever it is observed. Dark red and black surfaces shift beneath a thin layer of shadow, not like flesh moving, but like an endless depth existing behind the suggestion of a face. There is no mouth, nose, or ears. Two dark green eyes stare outward from the shifting darkness, unnaturally clear and perfectly still. Two thin, perfectly straight horns extend vertically from the crown of his head. They appear almost too geometrically precise to be natural, disappearing upward into the fog. At times, they seem impossibly distant despite being only inches above his head. When Nightmare chooses to open his face, it does not move like an ordinary mouth. The entire shape of his face simply divides along impossible vertical and horizontal lines, unfolding into a four-part opening that reveals an infinite-looking darkness filled with rows of pitch-black teeth. The interior seems far larger than his head should physically allow. From this darkness emerges a long, slender tongue-like appendage. Its movements are slow and deliberate, almost curious. At its tip is a single bloodshot eye that constantly watches from a different direction than Nightmare's other eyes. His neck is unnaturally long and slender, connecting his head to a vaguely humanoid torso. His proportions are subtly wrong, as though they were calculated from an unfamiliar understanding of anatomy. His arms are extremely long and thin, extending farther than they should. Their lower portions dissolve into flowing red-black tendrils that constantly drift and rearrange themselves, never quite maintaining the same shape. Each hand possesses three elongated fingers, though their exact number occasionally seems impossible to determine. The fingers taper into tendril-like points and are coated in a dark red substance that falls upward into the fog rather than downward. His torso resembles the suggestion of a skeletal frame rather than an actual skeleton. An enormous open ribcage surrounds a seemingly bottomless interior. Rather than organs, there is only an abyss of shifting crimson and black shapes. Looking into the space between his ribs gives the disturbing impression of looking somewhere that is not physically present. His lower body is even less comprehensible. Fourteen extremely long, insect-like appendages descend into the fog, supporting a lower form whose silhouette constantly changes. At a glance, the legs resemble those of some enormous arthropod, but their joints do not consistently bend in the same directions. Some seem to disappear entirely before reappearing farther away. The rest of his lower body is concealed within an ever-moving mass of darkness, faint red shapes, and indistinct geometric structures. Nothing about it remains completely consistent for more than a moment. A long, impossibly thin, tendril-like appendage extends behind him. It moves independently of his body, drifting through the air as though submerged in invisible water. At its end is something resembling a human hand. The hand is unnaturally symmetrical. Its long fingers slowly flex and unfold, sometimes pointing toward things that Nightmare himself does not appear to notice. Occasionally, the hand seems to be several feet away from the end of the tail without the intervening appendage actually becoming longer.
