To encounter a Wild Elf in their native habitat is to understand, viscerally and
immediately, why the ancient texts describe them as creatures of the wood rather
than dwellers within it. They do not merely live among the trees; they have become
part of them. Their skin presents in deep greens, rich browns, and bark-like patterns
that shift and mottle with the seasons — darker in winter, dappled with golden patches
in autumn, threaded with new-growth green in spring. Standing still against an oak
trunk, a wild elf becomes functionally invisible to the untrained eye, a fact I
can attest to from the profoundly unnerving experience of leaning against what I
believed to be a tree and discovering it had a heartbeat.
Their hair resembles vines, moss, or autumn leaves depending on the season and the
individual — some specimens exhibit hair that appears to be actual living vegetation,
threaded with tiny flowers in spring and shedding miniature leaves in autumn, though
whether this is a biological reality or an extraordinarily persistent glamour I
have never been able to determine. Their eyes glow in shades of amber, jade, or
vivid green, with a faintly feral quality that distinguishes them from the cold
luminescence of the high elves. Their ears are long and distinctly leaf-shaped,
tapering to points that echo the silhouette of the canopy above them.
Culture
Wild elves live in hidden groves and treetop sanctuaries constructed so artfully
within the canopy that one can walk directly beneath a wild elven settlement of
two hundred souls and never suspect its existence. Their architecture does not impose
upon the forest; it negotiates with it — platforms woven between living branches,
bridges spun from spider-silk and vine, dwellings grown from shaped wood that continues
to leaf and flower long after being incorporated into the structure.
Their society is built around druidic tradition, animal kinship, spiritual guardianship,
and fierce territorial protection. Each wild elven community considers itself the
guardian of a specific tract of wilderness, and this stewardship is taken with a
seriousness that borders on the religious — or, more accurately, that is religious,
for the wild elves draw no distinction between ecological duty and spiritual obligation.
To harm the forest under a wild elf's protection is to desecrate a temple, and the
response is commensurate.
They are the most territorial of all elven lineages, and their response to uninvited
incursion ranges from subtle discouragement — paths that loop back on themselves,
animal sentries that shadow intruders, an oppressive sense of being watched — to
outright violence, delivered with a swiftness and silence that leaves no survivors
to report on the experience. I secured passage through wild elven territory only
after six months of negotiation conducted entirely through carved tokens left at
the forest's edge. The wild elves never once showed themselves during this process.
I respected them enormously for it.
Magic
The Forestborn excel in druidcraft, shapeshifting, animal communication, and the
manipulation of weather and plant life. Their magic is not learned from books or
taught in towers; it is absorbed from the living world around them, a continuous
dialogue between the elf and the ecosystem in which she is embedded. A wild elven
druid does not command nature; she asks, and nature — having known her family for
a thousand years — obliges. I have watched a wild elf coax a century-old oak to
shift its roots aside to reveal a hidden spring, and the tree moved with the willingness
of a friend doing a favour. Their shapeshifting abilities are particularly remarkable:
senior druids can assume the form of any creature native to their territory, and
some are said to spend years at a time in animal form, returning to elven shape
only when the affairs of the community require their counsel.
