Lore - Technology in Outlaw Country
One aspect I wanted to address in building the world of Outlaw Country is the world's level of technological advancement. My current theory is that the world of Outlaw Country would be behind our real world, for a few reasons: 1) Colonial resource extraction is nearly non-existent. The explosion of land and ocean-based super predators essentially ends colonialism after World War I. This means that the former colonial powers lack the raw materials that would be used for research and development. Batteries would be bulkier and heavier, circuit boards would be larger because the components on the boards would also be larger, and some components like solid state capacitors might not have been invented yet. 2) Development focus might be skewed in different directions, due to ongoing conditions. The super predators not only managed to heavily disrupt all oceanic trade routes, humanity's attention is also focused on them and how to deal with them. You don't have the time or luxury to develop new forms of microprocessor when your country has to beat back a giant fire ant colony that exploded in numbers at your southern boarder. Dealing with the constant threats from these predators means you have less time to research and develop new technologies that are not super predator related. Now, this isn't to say that new technologies aren't being developed in the world of Outlaw Country. No. If just means that, with access to fewer resources, that means that humanity needs to be more selective in what they develop. As mentioned in a previous lore piece, the need for international communications is great, and humanity would probably step up to the challenge. As mentioned in the previous piece, imagine if the Manhattan Project had nothing to do with atomic weaponry, but rather it was a communications project, hoping to join the world together in communication capabilities. Satellites! In the world of Outlaw Country, the need for satellite communication would be so great that they might have developed satellite communication before our world did. So, now that we've established that the world of Outlaw Country has lesser technological progression than our own, we also then come to the fact that the territory within Outlaw Country also lacks much of the manufacturing capabilities that most of the other nations have. Sure, there were some manufacturing capabilities within the territory of Outlaw Country, but those factories were abandoned many years/decades ago and require repair and time to bring them back to their previous capabilities. Even then, you now have a factory that used to produce laptops from 15 years ago. Not exactly cutting edge technology...but it is still technology that provides a service. As such, it's not uncommon to see older technology still being used regularly among not only the people of the world, but also the people within Outlaw Country's boarders. Break out your floppy disks and your parallel port cables, because that old tech still has its uses and it's available! (Of course, the powers within Outlaw Country would also trade with friendly factions/nations, so new technology would find its way within Outlaw Country so some degree)
