What constitutes an oni has evolved throughout history, ranging from invisible spirits and monstrous brutes to political outcasts and even guardian deities. Furthermore, the line between a kami (god) and an oni can be remarkably fluid in Japanese folklore, unlike Western mythology, which typically maintains a sharper distinction between divine and demonic statuses. Due to this fluidity, depictions of oni vary wildly. The most iconic imagery features a larger-than-human brute with red or blue skin, horns, a loincloth, and an iron club (kanabō). These entities are often depicted tormenting humanity, serving as a direct reflection of what Japanese society considered "evil" or "other" across different eras. In early written records such as the Izumo no Kuni Fudoki (733 CE), the earliest entity explicitly named an oni appears as a one-eyed creature that consumed a farmer. Additionally, in the Nihon Shoki (720 CE), foreign groups arriving on remote shores were framed as oni due to their unfamiliar faces, languages, and customs. A prominent example appears in the legend of Shuten-dōji ("The Sake-Drinking Boy"). Originally a human child of exceptional beauty or a young acolyte at Mount Hiei, he transformed into an oni after being consumed by pride and excessive drinking, or cursed by a ritual mask fused to his face. Shuten-dōji established a court of oni on Mount Ōe, northwest of Kyoto, where they kidnapped noblewomen and plundered imperial treasures. Emperor Ichijō dispatched the hero Minamoto no Yorimitsu (Raikō) and his Four Guardian Kings. Raikō tricked Shuten-dōji into drinking poisoned holy sake, paralyzing the demon king and allowing Raikō to sever his giant head. Scholars note that Shuten-dōji’s court mirrored the Kyoto imperial hierarchy inreverse; complete with feasts, ranks, and ritual drinking, symbolizing the imperial state's deep anxiety over uncontrolled peripheral territories. Similar allegories appear in tales like Momotarō ("Peach Boy"), where the protagonist defeats brutish oni through a harmonious alliance with animals (a dog, monkey, and pheasant). The most common legendary transformation occurs while a person is still alive.
