Story Chapter 42: Moment Before The End

She could hear her own breathing—shallow, uneven, almost impossibly loud in her ears. *Thump... thump... thump...* Her heart seemed to pound against her throat. “This... can't be happening...” Her voice was barely audible. She swallowed nervously, her eyes darting toward the executioner. Then— *CLACK.* His hand closed around the wooden lever. Haruka's eyes widened. “Wait...!” The executioner pulled. *CREAAAAK—THUD!* The wooden platform beneath Haruka suddenly gave way. “AHHHHHH!” A terrified, high-pitched scream escaped her as the floor disappeared beneath her feet. For one horrifying instant, Haruka felt completely weightless. Her stomach lurched. Her eyes flew wide as her body dropped into the sudden opening. “No! NO—!” Her scream echoed across the execution grounds. The crowd gasped. Haruka's hands remained restrained behind her back, leaving her completely unable to steady herself. The world seemed to slow around her. The gray sky. The wooden platform. The stunned faces of the villagers. The knight standing nearby. Everything blurred together as fear overwhelmed her. *I'm falling...* Her eyes squeezed shut. “PLEASE!” Her voice cracked into a terrified cry. The rope above her suddenly drew taut— And the chapter ends.
