The grandfather wears a deep indigo kimono under an ash-grey haori jacket, his hands resting gently on his knees, smiling warmly through round wire-rimmed spectacles with crinkling eyes and a neat white beard. Directly in front of him, the Rat chibi sits cross-legged, twitching soft grey mouse ears and clutching a roasted chestnut with both hands. To his immediate right leans the sturdy Ox chibi in an earth-brown vest, crowned with smooth curved cow horns and resting a palm solidly against the tatami. Curled beside him, the energetic Tiger chibi with orange-striped ears and a swishing banded tail flashes a fanged grin, leaning weight onto one hand. Tucked close to the grandfather’s left knee, the Rabbit chibi kneels quietly with tall white bunny ears softly folding at the tips, clad in a pale pink kimono. Behind the grandfather's right shoulder stands the dignified Dragon chibi, adorned with pale jade antler horns and translucent flowing sash ribbons. Draped gracefully along the grandfather's left shoulder, the serene Snake chibi with slit pupils and an emerald scale-patterned collar watches the room while resting a chin on folded arms. To the outer left edge of the circle, the spirited Horse chibi with equine ears and a swept-back crimson ponytail balances forward on one foot, while next to him the fluffy Goat chibi, crowned with spiral ram horns, snuggles into a high-collared cream fleece haori. Peeking from behind the grandfather's back, the playful Monkey chibi with round ears and a curling tail balances on tiptoes, waving playfully. To the outer right, the proud Rooster chibi with a vivid scarlet comb-like plume in his hair straightens his feather-patterned sleeves, standing beside the faithful Dog chibi who kneels eagerly on both knees, floppy canine ears perked and tail wagging as both hands rest on the tatami. Bolting eagerly into the front right corner, the Boar chibi with spiky russet hair and two tiny protruding tusks leans his torso far forward with a determined grin. Warm afternoon sunlight streams through open sliding shoji lattice doors along the engawa, casting distinct diagonal geometric grid shadows across the woven tatami rush mats and the hem of the grandfather’s indigo robe. The rendering features clean, delicate linework, soft pastel tones balanced by rich garment hues, and rounded, expressive facial features. Tender, joyous.
