In the left foreground a woman-less workbench of a flat tombstone holds the carving in progress: a second pumpkin with its top cut, a knife stuck blade-down in its flesh, and a wet spill of stringy guts and seeds spread across the stone, glistening, one strand draped over the edge. Beeswax candle stubs in a cluster beside it burn low, their flames bending all one way in the same draft that swirls the falling leaves; the candles are the warm light, throwing orange pools onto the stone and the pumpkin's wet interior, and the moon is the cold counter-light rimming every wet edge and skeletal leaf from behind. A sleek black cat with bright yellow eyes stands on the tombstone's far corner, front paws on the pumpkin's rim, head lowered, nose an inch from the guts. Palette: deep blue-black sky, cold silver moon, warm orange candlelight on carved flesh and leaf husks, a single hard glint off the cat's eyes, the crow's beak, the knife blade and the owl's pupils. Every lit surface faces the candle; everything else falls into blue shadow. The wind is visible only in the candle flames and the falling leaves, all consistently leaning the same direction. Quiet, macabre and playful.
