Clustered at the foot of the castle and along the wall's far side sit low houses with grey tiled gable roofs, their white walls catching the light. Dense trees surround the whole compound, broadleaf canopies massing green on both flanks and behind the pagoda, their crowns overlapping the architecture at the edges and throwing dappled shade across the far lawn and the base of the wall. The sky is a clear, saturated blue, filled with white fluffy cumulus clouds that pile up in bright, billowing towers, their sunlit tops brilliant and their undersides shading into soft blue-grey, drifting in layers that recede toward the horizon. A single sun, high and to the upper left and out of frame, rakes the scene: it strikes the tops of the clouds, the roof tiles and the stair treads, and throws the wall's shaded face, the undersides of the eaves and the shadow pooling at the foot of the fence into cool darkness, with the fence rails and tree trunks laying crisp shadows across the grass toward the lower right. Green, warm stone grey, sky blue and cloud white carry the palette, nothing else admitted beyond the pale plaster of the buildings. The air is still; the only motion implied is the slow drift of the cloud towers, and the scene is utterly empty of people — no figures on the stairs, none along the wall, none in the windows. Serene, sun-washed stillness.
