1girl, solo, from behind, looking back, looking at viewer, black hair, low ponytail, smile, standing, legs apart, arms on own hips, hands on own hips, kendo uniform, white dougi, black hakama pants, barefoot, bare feet, kendo armor, dou, tare, doujou, dojo interior, wooden floor, shoji screens, watercolor_(medium), paper_texture, She is seen from behind, a lone girl standing in the middle of a dojo, and her head is turned back over her right shoulder so her face comes into view toward the camera — black hair pulled into a low ponytail that hangs down the nape of her neck, its tip swaying out slightly where the turn has swung it. Her stance is wide, both feet planted flat and apart on the pale wooden floorboards, the right foot set forward of the left, weight sunk evenly between them; her toes are bare, and the boards take the print of them with a faint darkening in the grain where the pressure falls. Both hands are set on her own hips, fingers spread across the crest of the black hakama, elbows winged outward, the white dougi pulled taut in a diagonal crease from each shoulder down toward the hip bones. Over the dougi she wears the dou, a lacquered breastplate of horizontal iron-look plates with a dark cord lacing it across the chest, sitting high over her collarbones, and from its lower edge the tare hangs at her waist in overlapping lacquered panels that splay at the corners with the spread of her stance. The black hakama break in deep vertical pleats from the tare's hem to the floor, the fabric pulled by the width of her legs so the pleats fan outward and one panel swings slightly back past her calf. Her head is turned just far enough that one cheek and both eyes are clear; she looks straight into the viewer with a broad, open smile, lips parted, the corner of her mouth raised higher on the side nearest the camera, and one eyebrow lifted a little over a half-narrowed eye. Her left shoulder drops lower than the right where her weight has settled. The dojo recedes behind her: a bare wooden floor of long planks running toward the far wall, shoji screens of pale paper and dark wooden lattice along the right side, a low wooden bench and a rack of practice gear blurred at the left edge, midsized room, her body occupying the centre and cutting the far wall in two. Late afternoon light comes in low through the shoji on the right, the only light in the room; it strikes the right side of her face, the outer edge of the dou's plates and the right half of the hakama with warm cream brightness, leaves a bright graze along the ponytail, and lays four long lattice shadows diagonally across the floorboards to her left, where the left half of her body falls into soft shade and the dark of the dojo gathers in the corners. Palette: black hair and hakama, white and warm ivory of the dougi and shoji paper, the dark cord and lacquer of the armor, and the honey-pale wood of the floor, with the light doing all the color work. Watercolor rendering, loose linework dissolving into translucent washes, gentle color bleeding pooling along the lattice shadows and the seams of the hakama pleats, visible paper texture in the sky-bright shoji paper. Warm, confident, quietly proud.
