At the right edge a fox spirit in a white yukata carries a stack of paper lanterns on a pole across one shoulder, her free hand steadying the lowest lantern against her hip. Further back the ranks compress into silhouettes -- a long-nosed winged tengu with feathers fanned behind his shoulders, a faceless pale figure with its hand raised as if greeting, a snow woman whose breath fogs and does not disperse, a reptilian kappa with a water-filled dish balanced on his skull and both webbed hands pressed together -- all of them packed shoulder to shoulder, all of them facing the procession's direction of travel, gazes aimed forward and up the slope, none of them at the lens. The lanterns are the only light: each paper globe glows from a flame inside, throwing warm orange onto the undersides of chins, noses, shoulders, and the tops of feet, while the backs of every head and the far side of every body fall into cold indigo; above the crowd a full moon hangs in the upper left and lays a thin silver rim along the umbrella spirit's ribs, the tengu's feathers and the oni's horns, and beyond the last lantern the darkness is absolute. Fog pools knee-deep on the flagstones, and where each figure steps the mist is punched into visible swirls and dragged into thin wakes behind their heels; the nearest lanterns smear long soft reflections down the wet stone. Palette is restricted to lantern orange, deep indigo and moon silver over black, with one red oni skin and one white fox yukata as the only other colours admitted. Detail is spent on the front three figures -- horn texture, the paper ribs and torn seams of the umbrella, the flame visible through the lantern paper -- and thins progressively backward into silhouette and mist. Festive and eerie, a slow-building dread under the drums.
