The view is a medium-wide shot cut on a steep diagonal: Ranma Saotome fills the foreground, three-quarters away from the camera, his whole body pitched forward into his sprint down the tatami corridor of the Tendo house, while Akane Tendo runs in the background a good five tatami-mats behind him, both of them tearing toward the same far doorway at the end of the hall — he is unmistakably ahead, she is unmistakably behind, and the long corridor's floorboards and the shoji panels along the right wall draw converging lines that widen the gap between them.
Ranma's weight is on his front left leg, right leg kicked back off the mat, torso hinged forward at the hips so the red tangzhuang shirt pulls taut across his shoulders and its hem flips up behind him; his dark braided ponytail streams backward over his shoulder, the tail whipping sideways with the turn of his head. His left hand is clamped flat to the back of his own head, fingers dug into his black hair, elbow thrown up and out. His head is twisted hard over his right shoulder, chin nearly at his collarbone, so his wide blue eyes stare straight back past the fly swatter toward Akane behind him, brows shot high, mouth torn open in a full panicked scream, a bead of sweat flying off his temple. His right arm pumps forward mid-stride.
Akane's torso and legs drive straight forward down the corridor, her right foot planted and her left knee lifted high, blue skirt swinging with the stride; only her head is cranked around over her left shoulder to glare back at Ranma, short blue bob whipping across her cheek, yellow eyes narrowed hard under eyebrows slammed down into a furious V, mouth wide open mid-yell. Her right arm is cocked all the way back behind her ear, wrist snapped tight around the thin plastic handle of the fly swatter, the mesh head held high and clearly silhouetted against the pale shoji — a clean gap of empty air between its mesh and the back of Ranma's head, caught in the instant before the swing lands.
Light comes from the sunlit garden through the shoji on the right, warm and diffuse, laying soft bands across the tatami and the corridor's wooden frame, with the interior shadows sitting cool and grey under the eaves; the brighter outdoor glow behind the far doorway rims both figures in pale light. Speed lines streak along the tatami seams and the wall panels, and a small vase on a low shelf tips and spills a scatter of tatami dust and one loose petal in the slipstream of their passing. Palette held to warm wood browns, cream shoji, tatami green, Ranma's red shirt and black hair, Akane's blue hair and blue skirt, with the fly swatter's flat yellow popping as the brightest small accent in the frame. Frantic, comic mayhem.
