1girl, solo, new year, anime style, from above, cowboy shot, close-up, looking up at viewer, light smile, one eye closed, wink, head tilt, raised arm, outstretched arm, pointing up, long black hair, hair ribbon holding a small ponytail to one side, dark brown eyes, red haori over dark blue kimono with small white pattern, bare feet, kneeling, seiza, shoji screens, tatami mat, wooden veranda, snowy night, snow, winter, lantern, paper lantern, night, warm lighting, depth of field, from above, looking up at viewer, new year theme, positive absence state: no western clothing, no modern furniture, no necklace, no earrings, both earlobes bare and unobstructed
The camera looks down from above in a high angle, catching her from the knees up at the wooden edge of a Japanese house on New Year's night. She kneels seiza on the tatami just inside the open shoji screen, thighs folded over her heels, both knees pressing shallow depressions into the floor mat, her right hand braced flat against the outer frame beside her hip and her left arm flung up toward the roof eave with the index finger extended and the wrist bent back at the top of the reach, so the sleeve of her dark blue kimono slides down her raised forearm on a single fold and a strand of her long black hair spills over that shoulder where the motion has pulled loose from the small side-ponytail her ribbon holds. Her chin lifts to follow her pointing hand, her head tilts a few degrees toward the eave, one eye is closed in a wink and the other is open and angled up along her own arm at the hanging paper lantern, so the gaze lands on the lantern rather than on the camera; a faint closed-lip smile pulls the corner of her mouth higher on the side of the winking eye. Beyond the veranda rail the night is deep indigo with a light snowfall, and the lantern is the only warm light in the frame, amber, hanging directly above her raised hand and just clear of the roof eave: it paints the underside of her jaw, the inside of her reaching wrist and the top of her cheek in amber, throws her shadow down and to the left across the tatami and over her own folded knees, and leaves her far side and the house's interior in cool darkness. Snow has collected on the top of the lantern's wooden handle, on the veranda rail and on her red haori shoulders, but never on its underside or on the sheltered tatami under the eave, which stays dry and pale. Palette of deep indigo, amber and the haori's warm red against the kimono's dark blue. Sheer quiet night, but lively with her own mischief.
