Shot from above at a slight three-quarter angle, the frame catching one girl from the crown of her head to her hips, tilted so the camera looks down onto her bowed head and lifted hands. From the curled fingertips extend very long, slightly curved nails, every one of them lacquered a solid glossy black with a hard pinpoint highlight, the length of them clearly exaggerated and each finger rendered individually, knuckle by knuckle, the pads of the fingers denting the wool where they press. The weight of the gesture pulls the cardigan's front edge askew so the collar of the shirt shows off-center.
The light is a single soft key from high and to her right, matching the camera's descent, laying a broad clean falloff across the top of her head, the ridge of the checkered hairband and the upfacing planes of her knuckles, while the undersides of her chin, the inside of the pulled sleeve and the deep channels between the wool folds hold the only real shadow; there is no cast shadow on the ground because there is no ground. Palette is disciplined to navy, white, brown and her purple eyes, with the black of the nails the single hardest, darkest value in the picture and nothing else admitted.
