Shot from above and slightly behind, looking down the rock shelf of a hot spring at night: two mermaids haul themselves out of the water onto land and lie together across a bed of stacked shells at the pool's lip. The shell bed fills the lower half of the frame — overlapping fan, conch and abalone shells packed in a shallow bowl of wet stone, their ridged mouths turned up, some of them cupping a little water that mirrors the lantern glow. Below the shell bed the pool's surface sits flat and black-green, steam drifting off it in slow sheets and catching the light in soft veils.
On the right of the shell bed, Mualani has dragged her tail half out of the water: her long, wide fish tail, blue-green scaled and still glossy-wet, lies along the shells with its fluke flopped over the pool edge, the thin film of water sliding off it and running in bright lines down the ridges of the shells beneath her. She is propped on one elbow, weight on the shell rim, the other forearm resting across the top of her visibly rounded pregnant belly. She wears a shell bra — two large ridged shells cupped over her chest and tied with cord at the back — and nothing on her hands or arms, her bare tan shoulders and arms glossy with wet. Her long white hair with a blue gradient at the ends is wet and dragged back over one shoulder, the blue hairband and its twin braids dark with water, the braids dripping onto the shells. She turns her head toward the other girl, red eyes half-lidded and warm, a small closed-mouth smile, chin tilted down as she looks down and across at her.
On the left, Sigewinne sits upright in the curve of the shell bed, her smaller pastel-blue and lilac fish tail folded neatly in front of her, the fin resting flat on the shells. Her visibly pregnant belly rounds out under the shell bra that matches — paired shells held by the same cord — and her arms and hands are bare, both resting on the shells in front of her, fingers spread over the ridge of a large conch. Her blue hair in low twintails, multicoloured at the tips, is wet and stuck to her neck, the pink pom-pom ornaments hanging limp and dripping; the small bow sits at one tail's root. She tilts her face up toward Mualani, blue eyes wide and pleased, the corners of her mouth pushed up in a small delighted grin, one brow lifted.
A single paper lantern hangs on a pole at the top right of the frame, the only warm light source: it strikes the high planes of both girls' shoulders, cheeks, bellies and the upward-facing ridges of the shells, and it leaves the undersides of the shell bed and the far rock wall in darkness; a faint reflected patch of it trembles on the pool surface below. Palette locked to deep hot-spring green-black, shell cream and coral, warm amber lantern, and the blues of wet hair and tails. The physics tell: steam only rises off the water and off their wet tails, condensing on the cold shells behind them while the shell lip closest to the water darkens with a thin soaked line. Quiet, tender.
