Seen from above and tilted on a dutch angle, the path is the spine of the picture, running diagonally from the lower left toward the upper right where the three of them come up along it, foreshortened by the high camera so their shoulders sit close under their chins and the path falls away in front of them. Futaba leads, caught mid-step with her left foot planted and her right knee lifted, her long-sleeved kimono of red floral print swinging around her calves, the obi cream and red-banded at her waist, her bare shoulders lifted above the soft slippery collar, both gloved hands raised in a wide waving arc above her head, one eye squeezed shut in a wink and the other fixed down the path toward the viewer, her open-mouthed grin creasing into a laugh, the short red hair with a strand falling between her eyes flipped off her brow by the sheer bounce of the step. Mitsuba is a half-step behind her on the right, weight on her back leg and hip cocked as though she has just been walking and been claimed for a photo, her brown hair up in short blunt-banged twintails cinched with a red ribbon on the right side, yellow-brown eyes glancing sideways after Futaba's swinging sleeve rather than at the lens, white short-sleeved shirt tucked into white short shorts, one hand pulled up small at her chest and the other hanging open at her side, mouth drawn into a flat unimpressed pout. Hitoha hangs at the rear left, shorter than the pair of them in the perspective, black hair pinned into a single bun with the rest of it cut short, slowly lifting one hand in a semi-pack of a wave and looking up and forward with half-lidded blue eyes, her mouth hung open in a small convenience of surprise that has not yet become a word. The path is a pale sandy band between clipped grass verges, a wide green tree crown intruding into the bottom right of the frame as a near-mass of leaves, and above it a hard blue sky broken by a few high clouds. Light is a single low afternoon sun striking in from the left, dropping each of them a compressed shadow that falls to the right and shortens under the steep downward angle, the strongest highlights on the crowns of their heads, the tops of their shoulders and the crest of Futaba's waving sleeve, with the shade sitting under their chins and inside the folds of the kimono; the palette is held to red in Futaba's print, black and blue in Hitoha, yellow-brown in Mitsuba's eyes and the grass and the day, and white in her shirt and the clouds. Each blade catches the sun on its upward-facing edge, the rest stays green, and the path is flecked with the three of their foreshortened shadows near the front of the frame. Bright, breezy, and a little mischievous.
