Story chapter 26: The Stifling Cell
The hours seemed to crawl by. Haruka sat on the wooden bench, staring toward the narrow iron-barred window. The dungeon cell was stifling, and the small opening provided almost no relief. Only an occasional faint breeze slipped through the bars before disappearing again. Haruka shifted uncomfortably. “This is unbearable…” She tried moving her restrained hands, hoping to find a position that was less uncomfortable. The metal cuffs gave a dull clink behind her back. *Clink… clink…* She pulled against them in frustration. “Nh…” Another tug produced only the same cold metallic rattle. “Why won't they loosen these?!” She twisted her wrists carefully, testing the restraints. *Clank. Clink.* A frustrated grunt escaped her. “Ugh…!” Haruka stopped and lowered her head, breathing heavily. She was exhausted, overheated, and increasingly frustrated. She could feel herself getting dangerously close to tears. “No… I'm not going to cry.” Her voice trembled. “I have to stay calm…” She tried the restraints once more. *Clink—clank.* Haruka immediately stopped herself. “Enough.” She took several slow breaths. After a moment, she stood. The wooden bench creaked beneath her as she rose. She walked carefully toward the barred window, her restrained hands remaining behind her back. When she reached it, she stood as close as she could and closed her eyes. A faint breeze finally brushed across her face. Haruka exhaled slowly. “Ah…” She remained there, breathing in the cooler air. For the first time in several minutes, her shoulders began to relax. “Just… calm down, Haruka.” The dungeon remained silent around her. For now, she simply stood beside the window, trying to regain her composure.
