I had an idea for this character and I think you'll see it when I say the two word phrase: "Landsknecht Rolento" -Landsknecht were ornate and very well trained mercenaries during the Early Modern Period (~1500-1800) -Rolento was a villain character from the Capcom series "Final Fight" and "Street Fighter Alpha 2 & 3" I essentially took the Rolento character and applied a mild sort of Landsknecht aesthetic over him. While the character Roland is based on is a villain, I'm thinking the former captain here is a no-nonsense leader figure. The original Rolento character had hand grenades attached to his load bearing gear, but since this is a fantasy setting, I went with more alchemical grenades in the potions attached to his gear. The green potion in his right hand? Oh, you better believe that's an explosive! I had the idea for this character last night (the image as well, but I was too tired to write this up and upload everything.
