Story Chapter 41: Final Plea
The executioner slowly reached toward the rope hanging above Haruka. She stood completely still. The knight remained behind her, keeping her restrained as the executioner lifted the noose and carefully placed it around her neck. Haruka's breath caught. The rope rested against her collar as the executioner fastened it securely. “No...” Her voice trembled. Haruka stared ahead, her eyes wide with disbelief. “This isn't real...” A sob escaped her. “This isn't real... this can't be happening...” She shook her head slowly, tears running down her cheeks. “I was just trying to find someone... I didn't hurt anyone...” The crowd that had been shouting moments earlier gradually began to quiet. The cries of “Kill the witch!” and “Execute her!” faded into uneasy murmurs. Haruka looked across the silent crowd. For the first time, there was no anger in her expression. Only despair. Her shoulders trembled as she struggled to hold herself together. The executioner stepped back and looked at her. “You have been granted your final words.” Haruka's lips quivered. “My... final words?” She swallowed, her voice cracking. “Please...” She looked desperately toward the villagers. “Please, listen to me.” Her breathing became uneven. “I don't know why I'm here. I don't know anything about your kingdom or your laws.” She shook her head. “I am not a witch.” Her voice broke into a sob. “I swear I'm not.” The executioner remained silent. Haruka lowered her head. “Please... I'm begging you.” She struggled to speak through her tears. “I don't want to die.” Her voice became barely audible. “I just want to go home.” She closed her eyes tightly. “Please... someone believe me.” The once-furious crowd remained strangely quiet. Haruka stood beneath the hanging rope, trembling as she waited for what would happen next. The chapter ends.
