She leans forward over a dark polished mahogany table, shifting her weight onto her front foot so that the ruffled hem of her crisp white pinafore apron sways forward against her long-sleeved dark dress. Her hair is glossy dark brown, parted neatly and swept into a low braided chignon fastened beneath an unadorned white frilled maid band, leaving her neck and unadorned earlobes clean and unobstructed. Her left hand is braced palm-up underneath a circular silver tray balanced against her waist, carrying an extra porcelain pot, while the delicate fingers of her right hand guide the gilded rim of a bone china teacup and saucer onto the tabletop. Her fingertips maintain contact with the edge of the saucer at the exact instant it meets the lacquered wood. Her gaze is tilted upward from her task, meeting the viewer's eyes with a warm, attentive crescent-eyed smile and faintly flushed cheeks. Natural morning light streams from an unseen tall window on the left, catching the starched pleats of her apron shoulder straps, tracing a bright rim along her jaw and dark hair, and throwing a soft diagonal shadow across the wood grain. Inside the porcelain cup, pale curls of translucent steam drift upward against the shadowed background, while tiny concentric ripples on the surface of the amber tea settle from the movement. Warm, attentive.
