Is this a Headmaster's office or a petting zoo?” one former headmaster grumbled. “Miss Dumbledore, perhaps you could pay attention to something besides that bird!” another portrait protested. “Back in my day, students showed proper respect for this office!” Alba didn't even turn her head. “Mm-hmm. Of course.” She continued stroking Fawkes. “Your feathers are so pretty today! Did you polish them yourself, you clever boy?” Fawkes answered with a melodious chirp and affectionately rubbed his head against her cheek. Alba giggled, completely enchanted. The portraits erupted into further complaints. “This is outrageous!” “She's ignoring us!” “Someone ought to remind her that this is a place of education!” Alba finally glanced in their direction. For one hopeful moment, the former headmasters fell silent. “Could you please keep your voices down?” she asked sweetly. “Fawkes is enjoying himself.” Then she turned back to the phoenix. The portraits stared at one another in collective disbelief. Apparently, the world according to Alba Percilla Wulfrica Brianna Dumbledore consisted of two things: herself and Fawkes. And judging by the way the phoenix nestled contentedly against her, he had absolutely no objections to that arrangement.
