character: torkoal, arcanine, camerupt street scene, ramen shop exterior, ramen shop sign, hanging noren curtain, middle-aged male ramen shop owner, customers, crowd, lively bustling crowd, Arcanine, Torkoal, Camerupt, multiple boys, multiple girls, from below, wide shot, dutch angle, warm summer evening, lantern light, steam, looking at another, open mouth, grin, pointing, leaning forward, foreshortening, depth of field From a low, slightly tilted wide angle at knee height, the narrow street in front of the ramen shop fills the frame: the shopfront occupies the left two thirds, a red-and-white striped awning slanting up out of the top-left corner, a great white paper lantern hanging under its edge, and the wooden counter visible through the open sliding door where steam curls out over the threshold into the street. Above the door a horizontal wooden board carries the shop's name in thick black brush lettering, "ラーメン屋", the strokes slightly worn at their edges and following the grain of the board; a smaller vertical banner beside the entrance repeats "ラーメン" on pale cloth that ripples faintly in the warm draft from the kitchen. The middle-aged owner stands in the doorway, half-turned back toward the counter but head swung over his shoulder toward the street, white cotton t-shirt sleeves pushed to the elbows, dark blue hachimaki knotted at his brow, white apron string crossing at his waist, one hand lifting a steaming bowl level with his chest while the other holds back the noren; sweat at his temple, mouth open in a shouted greeting, eyes crinkled. In front of him, packed shoulder to shoulder and cut off by the near edge of the frame so their legs foreshorten hugely, the customers press in: a young man in a beige polo shirt leaning over the counter with chopsticks raised, a woman with her hair tied back in a ponytail in a floral blouse holding a paper ticket toward the owner, two more patrons behind them queuing with their chins lifted to read the menu strips pasted along the wall. To the right of the shopfront the three creatures wait on the pavement: a great orange-and-black-striped canine the size of a small horse sits squarely on its haunches, cream mane and tail fur lifted by the warm updraft from the kitchen vent, muzzle pointed up and nostrils flared toward the smell, one forepaw planted between two stone paving slabs; beside it a squat dark-shelled tortoise-like creature with a glowing coal-orange core inside its shell leans its head out on a long neck, a thin plume of smoke rising from the vents along its back; and further back a humped camel-like creature with dull red fur and a slate-grey volcano hump stands with its head turned toward the counter, its vent crusted and faintly ashen at the rim. The creatures' eyes all angle toward the doorway where the steam comes out. Light comes from the lantern and the open kitchen behind it, warm amber, falling across the faces of the crowd and leaving the far end of the street in a soft blue-grey dusk; the steam glows where it crosses the lantern's cone and the pavement under the lantern is wet-dark while the pavement under the awning stays dry. Palette is amber, vermilion, cream and blue-grey, with the creature's orange stripes and the shell's coal core as the hottest notes. Effortlessly convivial.
