A second smaller eye is set lower and off-center to the right, half-sunk in flesh. Both look straight down the lens, meeting the viewer's eyeline, and the gaze is held absolutely steady, unblinking, and the effect is that to hold the look is fatal. A thin, uneven mouth runs beneath the smaller eye, opening slightly, no breath. The lit side: a cold moon-shaft cuts through the canopy from behind and above the creature, rimming the top of its domed head and the fused shoulder plates in hard white-silver, and layering a faint luminous haze along the ribbed torso where the fog catches it. Its cast shadow lies over the forest floor in the foreground and its edge crosses the bottom of the frame; where the creature's claws press into the trunk, splintered bark curls out around the grip, and where the lowest hand hangs, the leaf litter is compressed and scattered in a crescent outward from the wrist. The forest is close and crowded -- midground trunks cross behind the creature and slip out of focus, and the background is a wall of vertical black trunks fading into fog, no horizon, no path, no sky except a few cold gaps above. Palette is limited to wet blacks, desaturated green-grey, a wet bark brown, and the two silver-white highlights in the eyes and moon rim. Thin fog hangs at ankle height and around the creature's knees, drifting, and the only sharp edges in the whole image are the rim-lit crest of the head, the wet highlights on the eye, and the bark around the gripping fingers. Quiet dread, suffocating.
