The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle

2 males, anthro, furry, dog boy, border collie (left), scottish terrier (right), ochre fur, yellow-brown fur, grey fur, beast-like physique, fangs, black nose, pointed ears, serious expression, troubled expression, worried, plump, stout build, black scotch mustache, white long-sleeve shirt, brown vest, santa costume, santa hat, red coat with white fur trim, black belt, holding magnifying glass, holding blue gemstone, examining gemstone, magnifying glass, blue gemstone, white goose, holding goose in both arms, standing, from side, three-quarter view, cowboy shot, western-style room, indoors, wooden paneled wall, patterned wallpaper, armchair, fireplace, warm lamplight, two subjects, no text A three-quarter side view at cowboy-shot height sets the two of them in a western-style interior: a room whose far wall is papered in a faded damask pattern above a dado of dark carved wood, a high-backed upholstered armchair and a low marble-topped side table behind them, a fireplace off to the right edge whose firelight is one of two light sources in the room. The left figure stands angled toward the centre of the frame, and the right figure stands a half-step behind and to his right, so the two bodies overlap only at the right figure's shoulder drawn across the left figure's back. On the left, the border collie anthro stands with his weight on his right leg and his left hip dropped, torso turned toward the lens but head tipped down over his hands. His fur is a warm ochre yellow-brown over the muzzle, brow, chest and forearms, with a coarse, brushable texture and longer ruff hair at the cheeks and throat; his ears stand half-pricked and one of them cocks slightly forward. He wears a white long-sleeve shirt buttoned to the collar with the cuffs rolled once at the wrists, and over it a brown vest of heavy wool, its front panels hanging open and its two lower buttons fastened, the vest pulling slightly across his shoulders as he leans forward. His right hand is raised between his chest and his face, thumb and two fingers pinched around the handle of a brass-rimmed magnifying glass, the disk held at a slight tilt so its lens catches the lamplight as a thin curved glare; his left hand is below and behind it, cupped upward, cradling one faceted blue gemstone the size of a plum, its lower facets glowing from within and throwing a small cold blue highlight onto the underside of his chin and the white shirt cuff. He looks down through the lens at the stone, the visible eye narrowed and fixed, the brows drawn low, the mouth closed in a flat serious line, his whole head still. The gemstone's blue edge and the lens's rim nearly touch, the glass floating a finger's width above the stone. On the right, the Scottish terrier anthro stands squarely behind him, his plump stout build filling a santa costume: a red coat with thick white fur trim at the collar, hem and cuffs, a black belt pulled snug over his soft belly, and a red santa hat whose white bobble slumps to one side. His fur is grey, dense and slightly wiry over the muzzle and brow, longer around the jaw. A black scotch-style mustache sits on his upper lip, thick and blunt-cut, the hair of it bristling outward at the ends. His expression is troubled: the inner ends of his brows pulled up and together, his eyes wide with the whites showing at the bottom, the corners of his mouth dragged down under the mustache, one ear flattened back. Both arms are folded up and forward, hands tucked under a single white goose that he carries against his chest — the goose's body pressed to the red coat, its breast feathers flattened where his forearms clamp it, its neck rising over his right shoulder and its beak turned back toward his cheek, one webbed foot hanging loose over his sleeve. His gaze flicks sideways toward the other man's hands and the glittering stone, and his chin pulls in. The room's light comes from two directions: warm lamplight from a shaded lamp on the side table at the left of frame, raking across the border collie's shoulder and the lens of the magnifying glass, and the low orange firelight from the hearth at the right, catching the fur trim of the santa coat and the white of the goose. Shadows fall behind both figures onto the paneled wall, doubled and overlapping where their bodies overlap. The border collie's serious concentration and the terrier's worried hesitation hold against each other across the half-step between them, in a palette of ochre, grey, brown wool, deep red and the single cold blue of the gemstone — quiet, faintly comic domestic tension.
