It dissolves upward into a battlefield: an ambiguously middle-eastern landscape of low flat-roofed adobe buildings, a broken mud-brick parapet and a dusty slope of pale rubble, the wall's own texture and paint edge still legible where the two layers overlap so that the man's rumpled sheets and the parapet share the same contour. Across that middle distance a troop of soldiers is dug into a combat outpost, four or five figures in helmets and dusty camouflage crouched behind the wall's broken edge and behind a stacked crate, seen small and in depth. Two of them fire over the parapet away from the camera and off frame to the right; the muzzle flashes throw hard orange light onto their sleeves, the underside of their helmets and the dust clouding in front of them, and the flash blooms so close to the seated man's pillow that the light the two layers share reads as one source. A third soldier is reloading with his head down, a fourth is framed at a gap in the wall with his rifle shouldered and his cheek on the stock, all of their gazes and all of their weapons aimed out of the picture to the right. No opposing figures are anywhere in the frame; the enemies exist only as the direction the barrels point and the impact dust kicked up along the parapet at the far right edge. Dust haze, ejected brass and a torn strip of smoke drift across the join between wall and battlefield. The whole image is double exposure: the bedroom occupies the lower half and the battlefield the upper half, and the soldier layer bleeds down as under-exposed ghosts through the folds of the tangled sheet while the sheet's own rumpling shows through the smoke, edges doubled and semi-transparent where they cross. Palette limited to cold blue-grey night, the man's raw reddish-brown and skin tones, and the hot orange of the muzzle flashes. Semi-realistic rendering, fine grain in the shadows. The single physical tell: the flare of each shot lights the soldier's face and the sleeping man's cheek in the same instant, and only the upward-facing surfaces catch that orange. Restless, ominous.
