Every water droplet on that lit band carries its own tiny specular pinpoint -- a crisp white dot on the light side of each bead, its darker, softer under-curve beneath -- and the droplets shadow themselves: pinhead shadows stretch just to the right of each bead across the waxy peel. The gloss of the skin answers the light as a broad, soft highlight rather than a mirror, evidence of the waxy bloom that coats the fruit. Depth of field is razor thin, focused on a cluster of larger dew beads in the middle third of the lit band; the beads in front of that plane are soft round blurs of red and white, and behind it the skin dissolves into a field of deep crimson and charcoal bokeh, each out-of-focus droplet blooming into a small dark-rimmed disc. The largest beads stand in true relief, their surface tension pulling them into flattened domes that distort the red of the skin beneath into a darker, magnified curve; a few have merged into a heavier, sagging drop that has begun to run, leaving a thin wet trail of darker, glossier peel behind it. Where two droplets touch, the smaller one is drawn slightly toward the bigger, and the seam between them reads as a fine dark line. The palette is ruthlessly narrow: the apple's deep crimson -- near-black in the shadows, scarlet where the light flares -- a cold white on the specular points, and the charcoal ground, nothing else admitted. Fine grain of the peel's stipple is visible only where the light grazes, and the background has a faint, even photographic grain. Still, cold, and almost tactile with wetness.
