A few pale ash flakes have settled on the upturned flat top of the sword's guard and on the crests of the pauldrons, while the vertical faces stay clear. Behind and around the knight, a dead forest of withered trees rises, their trunks and bare limbs bleached to white and grey, patches of blackened bark running up the windward sides; small black bone-like crystals sprout in clusters at the base of the trunks and on exposed roots, and a few cling to the bark in the crook of a branch. The grey sky above is a flat, soft overcast, the only light source — diffuse and cold, no sun disc, no hard shadows, the knight's own shadow pooling softly and vaguely under the feet. Ash falls steadily through the whole frame, near flakes large and soft, far flakes fine and dim as they recede, the nearest pieces drifting and blurred across the black armor. The palette is grey sky, white-grey dead wood, black armor and black crystal, and the one warm thread of gold trim. Silent, monumental, quiet dread.
