Each girl is a full-body mummy bundle of wrapped futon and blanket, cinched in overlapping diagonal bands that run shoulder to ankle, so only her head and a swelling diaper silhouette break the swaddle. Left to right the blankets run pink with a scattered flower print, orange with a gingham check, yellow with repeating happy-heart motif, green with a fine flower print, and blue with a gingham check; the wraps band tightly over each chest and belly, pushing each huge bulky layered diaper forward into a rounded frilled dome at the hips, the ruffled lace edge of the outermost layer flopping over the mat, thick padding creasing at the crotch. Every pair of arms is pinned straight behind the back, hands lost in the wrap, shoulders drawn back and ribs lifted by the strain. Each girl's head is tied off with a strip of colored tape that crosses the mouth as a wrap gag and doubles back over the crown, so the tape runs through the hair, binds locks flat against the scalp, and pulls the twintails, ponytail and tri-tails askew in taut dragged strands; a frilled lace bonnet sits pushed back on each head, its ribbon ties knotted under the chin. Tears run sideways from the outer corners of each eye toward the mat, cheeks flushed deep pink, brows pinched high, mouths working behind the tape. Cure Happy's twintails jerk the tape sideways as she twists her chin; Cure Sunny's side bun is dragged flat; Cure Peace's ponytail is taped down the side of the mat; Cure March's very long green tail of hair is pulled taut across the floor; Cure Beauty's long blue hair fans out under the tape. All five rock their shoulders against the wrap, bodies bending at the waist in shallow struggling arcs. The room is soft pink: a white crib with a ruffled bumper against the back wall, a shelf of teddy bears and block toys, a plush rattle fallen on the floor, a canvas diaper bag with bottles and folded diapers spilling out of the open flap. Warm lamp light comes from a floor lamp at the upper right, casting long soft shadows of each bundled body toward the left across the mat; the mat fibers flatten where each bundle presses down. Pastel pink, orange, yellow, green and blue dominate, everything else cream and white. Tenderly unsettling.
