Rin stands on the left with her weight on her right foot, left knee slightly bent, one hand gripping the transparent umbrella's shaft with its clear canopy domed out over both their heads, its wet ribs beaded with leftover raindrops that catch the light; the other hand lifts, fingers half-curled, as if she has just pressed them to her chest. Her short blonde hair swings at her jaw, a white hair bow and a small hairclip pinned above one ear, blue eyes wide and soft, a light blush on her cheeks, her mouth opened in a small relieved laugh. Len stands close on her right, shoulder almost brushing hers, both hands pushing the transparent umbrella's rim slightly up to see past it, his head tipped so far back his short blonde hair falls away from his brow; his blue eyes catch the light, his long-sleeved white shirt and shorts are slightly rain-damp at the hems, and he is grinning open-mouthed, a warm flush along his nose. Above them the branch crosshatches the sky; the parent sparrow is caught mid-descent, wings spread and tail fanned, its small body angled downward, one foot reaching for the nest's rim, head dipped toward the chick, beak nearly touching the chick's, and the chick's downy feathers ruffle backward from the gust of the landing. The umbrella's clear dome overlaps the branch, the birds visible through it, their shapes slightly refracted and doubled at its curve; drops bead and run along its ribs, and where each drop hangs, the afternoon light bends through it into a tiny bright bead. Behind the figures the park is wet: puddles hold upside-down patches of brightening sky between tree roots, leaves gleam with a wet sheen, the path's gravel is dark with moisture, and the branches overhead drip in slow irregular taps. The soft sunlight breaks through thinning clouds behind the nest, so the birds and the umbrella's rim are backlit -- a pale gold rim along the parent sparrow's wings and the chick's fuzz, the two faces below lit by the soft bounced fill off the wet ground, with long soft shadows pooling at their feet. The palette is warm spring: wet greens and dark bark, pale gold light, Rin's white and blue-and-white garments against Len's white shirt, all softened by post-rain haze. Tender, wholesome.
