1 boy, solo, athletic body, dark skin, dark hair, short wavy hair, black eyes, scar over left eye, glowing left eye, golden eye glow, arms crossed, serious expression, gray formal shirt, collared shirt, long sleeves, baggy black pants, black shoes, standing, from below, low angle, full body, dutch angle slight, dirty old golden gears, giant gears in background, broken gears, translucent black puzzle pieces, puzzle pieces on floor, falling apart, golden outline, glowing outline, dim interior, shaft of light, dust motes, volumetric light, high contrast, warm gold against cold black
The camera sits low near the floor and tilts up at him, so the boy towers over the frame: he stands centred but angled a quarter turn to his left, weight loaded on his back right leg, hips slouched, one shoulder dropped lower than the other. His arms are folded tight across his chest, each hand gripping the opposite upper arm, fingers pressed into the gray fabric and creasing it; the shirt is buttoned to the collar with the cuffs squared, tucked into the black pants, whose baggy legs break in wide folds over the black shoes and pool slightly on the ground. His chin is down and his brow is drawn into a flat, hard line, mouth closed and set, and the black of his right eye fixes straight ahead on the viewer while the left eye burns from within with a solid golden light that spills a thin warm glow onto the bridge of his nose, the cheekbone, and the edge of the pale scar cutting over that eyebrow; the glow reaches nothing else in the frame. Short dark waves lift at the crown and cling at the temples, and a few strands at his left side are rimmed gold by his own eye.
Behind and around him, gears the size of rooms fill the background — tarnished brass and blackened iron, teeth chipped and grease-caked, some canted at angles as if the machine that held them has long since collapsed, their surfaces dull where dust has settled on every upward-facing rim and their undersides dark. A single cold shaft of light comes down from high behind him and to the right, striking the gear faces and the dust hanging in the air but leaving his front in shadow except for the eye. On the floor at his feet, flat on the boards and scattered outward toward the camera, lie translucent black puzzle pieces, each ghosted through to the bare floor beneath, and every one of them is edged in a fine luminous gold line so the field of scattered pieces reads as a broken constellation; near his shoes the pieces have come apart and slid, one or two tipped onto their edges, and the golden rims throw faint reflections onto the polished floorboards while the black interiors swallow the light. Gold and black carry the whole palette — no other hue admitted — with the gold living in the eye, the gear faces, the puzzle rims and the dust. Low, heavy, quietly menacing.
