The dress is a rococo catastrophe in pink and white: a stomacher of white satin so heavily encrusted with sequins and silver glitter that it reads as a solid sheet of sparks, the whole surface flaking loose glitter onto the rose upholstery beneath her; tiers of lace at every edge, some of it ripped and curling; ruffles stacked in three rows at the neckline and again at the elbows, one ruffle crushed under her arm; oversized bows of pink moiré ribbon tied at the shoulders, at the waist and at the wrists of the sleeves, so many that two of them collide; and a skirt inflated like a bell with panniers, so vast it spills over the front edge of the divan and hangs, the hem trailing sequins down toward the parquet floor. Small ridiculous ornaments are stitched all over it, porcelain roses, paste cameos and a tiny gilded bird.
The room behind her is a rococo salon out of focus, a tall window with tattered gold-leaf trim at frame left, boiserie paneling, a chandelier hanging out of frame at the top. A single shaft of cold pale daylight comes down through that window from the upper left, and it is the only light; it strikes the top of her forehead, the ridge of her nose, the tape's glossy surface and the swelling tops of her breasts, throws the eye sockets into shadow and leaves her bound hands and the near skirt in a soft grey dusk. Her cast shadow falls across the rose cushion to the lower right. Dust hangs in the beam; loose glitter sparkles only where the beam finds it. Palette confined to pink and white, gold, silver glitter, black and blue hair, and the cold white daylight. Cold, hopeless, quietly opulent.
