three people, from below, wide shot, low horizon, Tokyo Tower under construction, lattice steel tower rising half-built, Showa 33, 1958, old Tokyo shitamachi downtown, novelist, boy, girl, group employment, heartwarming, standing together, looking up, sky, dusk The camera sits low, tilted up past the rooflines of a shitamachi back street: a wide shot from below, the horizon low in the frame so that the half-built Tokyo Tower dominates the upper third, its rust-red lattice steel climbing into a pale evening sky with the crane arm and scaffolding still clinging to its unfinished tip, girders truncating in mid-air where the next section has not been riveted yet. Along the bottom two-thirds: a narrow lane of two-storey wooden row houses, weathered clapboard and soot-darkened plaster, tiled eaves overlapping into the street, laundry poles jutting out with towels and a work shirt hanging slack, a bicycle leaning against a wall, a hanging shop curtain faded at the fold, a single power pole with sagging wires crossing the sky. The three figures stand in the middle of the lane on the packed dirt, seen from below and slightly behind their shoulder line, all three with their faces lifted toward the tower. On the right, the novelist: a middle-aged man in a rumpled dark kimono jacket over a creased shirt, sleeves pushed to the elbow, a hand resting on a notebook tucked under his arm, thinning hair combed back, thin-rimmed glasses catching the light, his chin raised, a tired fondness around the eyes. In the center, slightly forward, the boy: small, maybe eight, in a patched short-sleeve shirt and shorts with knees worn thin, sandals, both hands shoved into his pockets, head tipped far back so his whole face is upturned, mouth slightly open in wonder, hair sticking up at the crown. On the left, the girl: a young woman from the countryside, hair in two low braids under a plain cloth headband, a cotton work blouse tucked into a dark skirt, a cloth bundle slung over one shoulder, one hand shading her eyes as she looks up, a small open smile, the other hand loose at her side. Light comes from the low sun behind the row houses on the left, warm orange raking across the faces and the split ends of the laundry, casting long shadows of all three diagonally to the right across the dirt lane; the tower's upper lattice still catches the light while its lower girders sit in cool blue shadow. Palette of warm amber, rust red, weathered grey-brown wood, and a cool twilight blue in the sky, nothing neon or modern. Dust motes float in the slanted light, and the towels on the line stir just enough to show the breeze moving toward the tower. Quiet, heartwarming.
