many hands, many tongues, disembodied hands, disembodied tongues, no humans, empty old apartment, low angle, from below, wide shot, dutch angle, interior, tatami room, peeling wallpaper, stained ceiling, dark corners, wet fleshy texture, pinkish-red tongues, pale hands, cramped, claustrophobic, unsettling, horror, muted palette, dim light
The camera looks up from floor level in a dutch-tilted wide shot, so the tatami of the old apartment runs diagonally toward the top of the frame and the ceiling presses down heavy in the upper third. No human figure appears anywhere: the room is empty of bodies, and every limb-like form in it is a hand on its own. Pale hands of mismatched sizes come out of the architecture -- three fingers of a large hand curl around the warped edge of a sliding closet door and grip it from the far side, a cluster of smaller hands pushes up through a soft collapse in the tatami seams with the woven straw split around their wrists, one open palm lies flat and upturned on the low table as if waiting for something to be placed in it, and a chain of hands reaches down out of a crack in the stained ceiling with the lowest one spread wide and the knuckles in front smaller than the ones behind, so the arm of hands recedes up into the dark. Wet pinkish-red tongues come from the gaps between these: one long tongue lolls from the black slit under a window sash and hangs until it touches the sill, curling at the tip; shorter tongues push out of the seam between wallpaper panels, licking the air in different directions; a fat tongue droops out of the same ceiling crack beside the reaching hands, and two more lick slowly along the frame of the closet door, leaving a slick shine. Everything wet catches the light and everything dry stays flat and dim. The single light source is a bare bulb on a short cord near the center of the ceiling: it is the only light, its pool falls on the low table, the upper faces of the reaching hands and the wet upper surfaces of the tongues, and beyond that pool the corners of the room are absolute darkness. Each tongue throws a small soft specular bead of bulb light on its upper curve; each hand’s shadow is thrown downward onto the tatami, sharpened and doubled by the tilt of the shot. The palette is tightly rationed -- mildew gray-green for the walls and tatami, discolored yellow-brown for the water-stained ceiling, sickly cream for the dry walls, and pinkish-red reserved only for the tongues, with the pale flesh of the hands standing between. The peeled wall shows a lighter rectangle where a hanging once was. Mood: quiet dread.
