1girl, solo, child, pale skin, long straight black hair, black long-sleeved dress, black stockings, bare feet, hiding, crouching, hugging own knees, arms wrapped around shins, chin on knees, looking up, wide-eyed, wary expression, from below, low angle, foreshortening, extreme size difference, giant furniture, giant chair leg, towering table leg, enormous wooden pillar, deep shadow, dark interior, dust motes, one small figure in vast space, dim warm light, living in concealment, secret dwelling, tiny bed of folded cloth, booru-style anchor tags,
From a low angle close to the floor, the camera looks up past the girl's bare feet and along the underside of a colossal wooden chair leg that rises out of frame like a load-bearing pillar. She is crouched in the wedge of shadow the leg casts, knees drawn up to her chest, both arms wrapped around her shins, one heel flat on the boards and the other foot lifted slightly so her toes rest on the side of her ankle. Her chin is propped on her knees; her long straight black hair spills over her shoulders and pools onto the floorboards behind her, a few strands caught under her hip. She is looking up and to the left of the frame, toward the far edge of her shadow where a slab of warm lamplight cuts across the boards, eyes wide and still, mouth closed and small -- listening for footsteps rather than posing for the viewer. Her black dress, long-sleeved and plain, is bunched at the elbows and hitched over her knees; her black stockings disappear into the dark under her thighs; her pale hands and face are the only bright planes in the lower half of the image.
The environment dwarfs her on every side. The chair leg occupies the right third of the frame and its varnished grain is drawn at a scale she can be measured against -- she is barely taller than the leg is wide. Above and beyond it the underside of a giant tabletop spans the frame edge to edge like a ceiling, its joists lost in gloom; on the left a table leg and the curve of a chair's seat rail frame a cavernous gap she has made a home of. Tucked into the deepest part of the shadow behind her, pressed against the chair leg's base, lies her bed: a folded stack of cloth, a chipped saucer holding a candle stub, a single wooden spoon -- small domestic objects arranged with care, the evidence of a life lived in hiding.
Light comes from a single low lamp somewhere beyond the left edge, warm and amber, entering under the furniture as a long horizontal band that strikes the near side of the chair leg and lays a bright stripe across the floorboards a few hands' width from her bare feet; everything behind and above her falls into deep brown-black shadow. The light she is not catching makes her shadow edge exact: her knees and the tip of her nose are rimmed with a thin warm edge, while her eyes and the hollow of her throat stay in darkness. Dust hangs in the beam, and the shadow of the chair leg is sharpest where it meets the lit floor and softens as it climbs the leg, because the lamp sits low.
Palette: black, deep umber and worn wood-browns, with one region of warm amber lamplight and cool pale skin and hair as the single bright note; no other colour admitted. The texture is the varnished wood, the dust, and the soft worn cloth of her dress. Quiet, watchful secrecy.
