From a high overhead view looking straight down into an open wooden coffin, a single girl lies on her back just as her eyes snap open. Her skin is a deep blue, smooth and cool-toned, and against it the thin white burial shroud reads almost luminous. The shroud is drawn tight over every contour of her body — clinging at the chest, the waist, the hips and the thighs — worn directly on bare skin with nothing beneath it, the fabric bunching and pulling where her shoulders and knees push against it. Sweeping black hair spills loose from its topknot across the coffin's inner lining, and a pair of curved dark horns rise from her forehead, their tips catching the candlelight. A long demon tail, thin and spade-tipped, curls along the inside of her right thigh, pressed between her leg and the shroud. Half-spread, leathery wings are cramped against the coffin walls, one wingtip bent up against the wooden lid edge, the membrane stretched taut where it meets the frame. Her lips part in shock, revealing a single sharp fang at the corner of her mouth. Both yellow eyes are wide, staring up past the coffin rim, and her right arm is bent at the elbow, hand lifted in front of her face — clawed blue fingers splayed as she turns her palm over and studies it, comprehension dawning. Her left hand grips the shroud's edge at her collarbone. The candle is the only light source, sitting on a ledge just beyond the coffin; its warm amber glow rakes across her face from the left, throws the right side of her cheeks and throat into deep shadow, and leaves the room beyond the coffin's rim in absolute blackness. The wood grain of the coffin and the weave of the shroud both show in the raking light; the shroud fabric bunches at the hip where she has shifted, and the wing membrane glows faint amber where the candlelight passes through it. Palette is candle-amber, blue skin, bone-white cloth and black wood, nothing else admitted. Gothic, unsettling, quietly momentous.
