From below, low and close, the camera looks up past a girl's chin into a bleached white-blue sky; she is caught in the middle of an August afternoon with nowhere to stand but the open. Her head tips back and her eyes go half-closed, lashes low, lips parted around a slow exhale she is too hot to finish; her loose dark hair is damp at the roots and a few strands have pasted themselves across her temple and the side of her neck, the rest lifted slightly and dropped again by air too warm to cool anything. She stands with her weight sunk into her left hip, right knee loose, one hand hooked into the neckline of her sleeveless white top and tugging it away from her skin so the fabric stands off her collarbone in a small stiff tent, the other hand lifted and fanning at her jaw with the fingers relaxed. Sunlight comes straight down out of an empty sky and is the only light in the frame: it burns the top of her shoulders and the bridge of her nose, throws her eye sockets and the hollow under her chin into hard-edged shadow, and lays a crisp dark silhouette of her own head onto the pavement at the bottom edge. The pavement is the revealer -- heat shimmer unsteadies the far kerb, and the single drop of sweat that runs from her hairline down the side of her throat catches the light as a bright bead before it disappears into the collar. Palette locked to bleached white, hot skin, one strip of flat cyan sky and the grey-white ground; nothing else admitted. Airless, wilting, gorgeous.
