The outfit design blends the Ottoman kaftan tradition with an outer kaftan crafted in the colour known as ‘Edirne red’—or ‘Turkish red’—which Europeans sought to replicate; this is paired with an inner kaftan woven from the webs of silkworms, resulting in a pristine white garment. The ensemble is brought together by Ottoman gold-embroidered calligraphy and lace embroidery on the chest.
