初め里見氏の安房に興るや、徳誼以て衆を率ゐ、英略以て堅を摧く。二總を平呑して、之れを十世に傳へ、八州を威服して、良めて百將の冠たり。是の時に當て、勇臣八人有り。各犬を以て姓と爲す。因て之を八犬士と稱す。其れ賢虞舜の八元に如ずと雖ども、忠魂義膽、宜しく楠家の八臣と年を同して談ずべきなり。
