Yet this was not truly the heavenly realm. It was a special stage performance prepared for the Qixi Festival. Luka and Gakupo were playing the legendary Weaver Girl and Cowherd, bringing the classic Chinese Qixi story to life on a carefully constructed Magpie Bridge stage. The backdrop was filled with a brilliant Milky Way, a full moon, and layers of celestial clouds. Magpie-shaped stage decorations lined the bridge, while traditional Chinese pavilions and cascading wisteria represented the distant Heavenly Palace. They had rehearsed the script many times and knew every line, every movement, and every mark on the stage. But once they truly stepped beneath the stage lights and faced a backdrop filled with countless stars, they both found themselves unconsciously immersed in their roles. The Milky Way stretched across the boundless night like a magnificent celestial river. Countless stars were scattered across it, as though someone had gently sprinkled silver dust across the deep blue and violet sky. A full moon hung high above them, its cool and gentle light filtering through thin clouds and bathing the entire stage in a hazy silver glow. Tonight was the one night in the story when two lovers separated by the Milky Way could meet again. The Magpie Bridge had been prepared. One by one, graceful magpies appeared from beyond the starry river, spreading their black-and-white wings beneath the moonlight. They made no noise. Instead, they seemed to call to one another across the celestial river, their wings brushing against the stars as they formed the sacred bridge connecting the two shores. At the opposite end of the bridge, Megurine Luka stood quietly beneath the moonlight. She wore an elegant celestial gown inspired by the Weaver Girl. Fine golden embroidery depicting flowing clouds and stars decorated the pink-and-white fabric. Her translucent sleeves drifted gently in the breeze, while long ribbons at her waist shimmered beneath the starlight. Her long pastel-pink hair flowed like a waterfall, and her blue eyes reflected the countless stars above. She lifted her gaze toward the other end of the Magpie Bridge. There stood a familiar figure dressed in purple. Kamui Gakupo wore a magnificent celestial robe inspired by the Cowherd, deep purple fabric adorned with intricate golden embroidery along the collar and sleeves. His long purple hair fell all the way to his waist, with the long locks beside both ears flowing over his shoulders in the night breeze. His violet eyes crossed the vast Milky Way and finally met Luka's gaze. For a moment, neither of them spoke. It felt as though an entire year of waiting disappeared within that single glance. Gakupo took the first step. One step, then another. The Magpie Bridge stretched beneath his feet above the river of stars. The magpies remained quietly beside the bridge, almost as if they too were waiting for this once-a-year reunion. Luka walked toward him as well. The distance between them gradually disappeared. At last, they stood close enough to reach out and touch one another. “Luka.” Gakupo called her name softly. It was only a name, yet it carried the weight of so much longing. Luka looked at him, and a gentle smile slowly appeared on her lips. “I’m here.” Gakupo reached out his hand. Without hesitation, Luka placed her hand in his palm. Their fingers naturally intertwined. The warmth of his hand made Luka lower her eyes slightly. “A year… It really is a long time,” she whispered. “That’s why I kept waiting.” Gakupo’s voice was soft, yet more steadfast than any oath. Luka raised her head and looked into his eyes. “You know, whenever I see Altair, I wonder if you are looking at it too.” “Of course I am.” Gakupo smiled. “Because whenever I look up at the stars, I know that you are beneath the same sky.” The Milky Way slowly flowed behind them. Moonlight fell upon their joined hands, while the golden embroidery and crystal ornaments reflected tiny fragments of light. In the distance, traditional Chinese pavilions disappeared into a sea of clouds. Wisteria cascaded along jade railings, its purple blossoms glowing faintly beneath the moon. From time to time, petals were lifted by the evening breeze, drifting past them before disappearing into the vast river of stars. There was no noisy crowd here, nor the ordinary festival lights of the mortal world. There were only the moon, the stars, the Milky Way, the Magpie Bridge, and two people who had waited an entire year to meet again. Gakupo raised his free hand and gently brushed away a strand of Luka’s hair that had been tousled by the wind. “You’re beautiful tonight.” Luka smiled softly. “Only tonight?” Gakupo paused for a moment before laughing quietly. “Every day.” “That’s better.” They smiled at each other. For that moment, even the endless Milky Way seemed to become gentler. According to the legend, Qixi was the one night each year when the Cowherd and the Weaver Girl could meet again. But perhaps what truly mattered was never simply that they could meet only once a year. What mattered was that even when separated by thousands of miles, even when the waiting became almost unbearable, they continued to believe— One day, they would meet again on the Magpie Bridge. Luka stepped a little closer, her pink hair lifting gently in the moonlit breeze. “Gakupo.” “Hmm?” “If I come again next Qixi, will you still be here?” Gakupo tightened his hold on her hand. “Then I will definitely come too.” “Not just next year.” Luka looked at him, starlight reflected in her eyes. “Every year.” Gakupo gave no verbal answer. He simply held her hand even more tightly. This moment had originally been nothing more than an action written into the script. But when their fingers truly intertwined, Luka almost forgot that she was acting. She looked into Gakupo’s eyes, and he was already looking back at her. The audience watched the reunion in complete silence. No one knew that, in that moment, the emotions in their eyes had already become more than those of the Cowherd and Weaver Girl they were portraying. Then Gakupo lowered his head and gently rested his forehead against hers. They were close enough to feel each other’s breath. Countless stars glittered behind them. A magpie flew overhead, its wings passing through the moonlight and leaving a brief black silhouette against the Milky Way. Luka closed her eyes. Gakupo quietly closed his eyes as well. On this Qixi stage, they made no grand, earth-shaking vows. Because to them, the most precious promises had never needed words. As long as the Magpie Bridge remained, as long as the Milky Way continued to flow, and as long as the stars rose into the Qixi sky each year— They would meet again. This reunion was originally only a brief moment from an ancient legend, and it was also a performance they were creating together that night. Yet they were two people who loved each other, finally holding one another’s hand once again beneath the vast river of stars. The moonlight slowly descended. The Milky Way shimmered brilliantly. Upon the Magpie Bridge, Luka and Gakupo stood side by side, their fingers intertwined. It seemed that the entire stage held nothing but the rhythm of their hearts and the everlasting starlight of Qixi Night. At last, the final musical note faded, and the stage lights slowly dimmed. Thunderous applause filled the venue. Luka and Gakupo remained in their positions, still gazing at each other as the Cowherd and Weaver Girl, until the curtain-call music began. Only then did they smile at each other. They knew that their Qixi performance had come to an end. But the feeling they had shared on the Magpie Bridge just moments ago was not a line written in the script.
