Banquet's Surprise

The grand hall is a symphony of color and light, with elegant banners fluttering from the high ceiling and a dazzling array of chandeliers casting a warm glow over the meticulously set tables. The air is thick with the scent of exotic spices and the murmur of hushed conversations as the most distinguished guests of the Southern Kingdom mingle with the Empire's nobility. Yet amidst the sea of opulent garments and glittering jewels, Emperor Yin's gaze sweeps the room in vain for his heart advisor. His eyes narrow slightly, a flicker of concern marring his otherwise stoic expression. The musicians tune their instruments, and the cacophony of their strings and woodwinds fills the air. Despite the grandeur, the Emperor's attention remains focused on the doors, his anticipation growing with each passing moment. The banquet is set to begin, and Meiyi, the linchpin of their strategy, is nowhere to be seen. As the whispers of Meiyi's absence spread through the hall, Yin maintains his poise, though the tightness in his chest betrays his inner turmoil. he has placed his faith in her, and she has not yet shown any sign of doubt. Yet, the ticking clock seems to echo louder with each passing second. He takes a deep breath, willing his heart to steady. "Fear not," He murmurs to himself, his voice a calm bastion amidst the rising tide of anxiety. "She will come. She has proven her worth, and she will not disappoint." Yin takes his seat at the head of the table, the dragon-emblazoned throne a stark reminder of the responsibility he bears. "If she is not here by the time the banquet commences, I shall proceed without her. Duty calls, and the Empire's future is at stake." The doors to the hall open, and a hush falls over the crowd as he awaits her arrival, the weight of theirs fates balanced precariously on the edge of a knife. Lord Zhou and Lady Li, seated among the distinguished guests, exchange knowing glances, their lips curling into the faintest smiles. Their eyes, however, hold a glint of curiosity as they observe the Emperor's increasing unease. "Your Highness," Lady Li says sweetly, her voice carrying just enough to be heard over the soft din of the room, her gaze flickering to the still-empty chair beside me. "Is your esteemed advisor perhaps lost in the labyrinth of your own palace?" Their question hangs in the air, a subtle challenge wrapped in the guise of courteous banter."Or perhaps," Lord Zhou adds with a chuckle, his eyes gleaming with amusement, "she has chosen to leave us all in suspense, eager to make a dramatic entrance?" Their words are as sharp as the swords at our sides, the underlying mockery cutting through the veneer of politeness. "Your concerns are noted," The emperor replies, his tone as cold and precise as the steel of his swords. "But Lady Meiyi is never one to be late without good reason. She understands the gravity of our situation." His gaze remains unwavering, though his thoughts are racing. What could have kept her? Was she truly ready to face the trials of this evening? Or had she been overwhelmed by the pressure? Yin pushes the doubts aside."Rest assured, she will be here when the performance begins. In the meantime," He gestures to the lavish spread of food and drink, "let us not allow our appetites to suffer. The feast is ready, and it would be a disservice to our esteemed guests to let it grow cold." The servers begin to circulate with trays of delicacies, and the guests reluctantly return to their conversations, though their glances frequently stray to the still-empty chair beside him. "Now," he announces, raising his voice just enough to command attention, "Let us toast to the prosperity of our two great nations and the strength of our friendship." The clinking of glasses fills the hall, a cacophony that drowns out the ticking clock, though the anticipation in the air remains palpable. The grand hall falls silent as the master of ceremonies steps forth, announcing the commencement of the Peking Opera performance. The doors slide open with a dramatic flourish, revealing a group of female dancers dressed in elegant red and gold silk. The lead performer, wearing a mask depicting a sorrowful face with peonies painted around the eyes, stands in the center. Her red translucent silk robe, adorned with intricate golden phoenix patterns, flows like liquid fire as she stands in the center of the room. Despite the mask's stark contrast with her refined attire, there's something eerily familiar about her poise and grace. Emperor Yin's heart drops as Meiyi has still not made an appearance, his mind racing with scenarios of her being unprepared or worse. The gentle melody fills the air, but his attention is split between the stage and the entrance, his eyes scanning the crowd for any sign of his absent heart advisor. Everyone seemed to have their eyes on her, but with the mask on, Meiyi felt calmer. No one knew who she was, allowing her to perform freely without the crushing weight of expectation. As the music started, she began to move slowly and gracefully before raising her voice in song. ‘Thin sweat clothing adorns the landscape of this calligraphy painting. Beautiful hands painted on expensive Luoyang paper.’ One of the dancers leaned in, holding out a scroll painted with a beautiful landscape. Meiyi’s hand caressed it gently before she turned aside to cup a peony offered by another dancer, leaning down to touch the petals with her forehead. ‘Sleep comfortably on top of the fallen flowers. The wind with a slight cold. a powdered face with a frown. Dressing in front of the mirror, listening to the outside world.’ Turning back, she faced a large mirror pushed forward by the surrounding dancers. She caressed her mask, perfectly portraying a maiden checking her appearance while swaying gently. ‘Affectionate people are sentimental. Dreams do not come true, feel distressed.’ Swaying to the side, she rested the back of her hand against her chin, a delicate gesture of a maiden in distress, before reaching up to pull the face mask down just as the chorus began, her voice soaring beautifully through the hall. ‘Crying with a handkerchief, tears came out. Thinking of your iron heart, I have shed a lot of tears.’ Her eyes glanced toward Yin’s surprised face, a small smile perking up the corners of her lips. The sharp red eyeliner made the tilt of her eyes look even more captivating. ‘Thought slowly, slow resentment, how long will it be? Half of the faith in exchange for half of the sadness.’ To everyone’s astonishment, with a swift, flourish movement, she slipped the outer layer of her robe down her shoulders, revealing a striking red phoenix drawn across her bare back. She tilted her head slightly, her gaze fixed entirely on Yin. ‘A cup of wine, give advice for juniors to stay. The drunken beauty in front, the excitement in your heart. Can't end love, can't manage chaotic thoughts.’ Taking a bottle of wine handed over by a dancer, she slid smoothly toward Lord Zhou's seat. Bending low, she poured the wine into his cup with practiced speed before gliding back to the center, raising the bottle high with an expression of tender, mournful longing. ‘Only wine can anesthetize me.’ As the singer's melodious voice fills the hall, a sense of déjà vu washes over him. Each note, each inflection, reminds him of the countless evenings spent listening to Meiyi's tales. The dance is mesmerizing, the storytelling captivating. And when she reveals herself, the room seems to hold its breath. The mask comes off, and there she stands, her emerald eyes sparkling with a mischievous delight that only Meiyi could possess. "You... " He whispers in astonishment, the room spinning around him for a moment. Her voice, the same one that had comforted him in moments of doubt and shared in his triumphs, had been guiding the emotions of the entire room. Her dramatic flair, so vivid and alive in this performance, is a testament to her spirit and courage. As she sings of love and loss, Yin feels the gravity of her words resonate within him. The mask falls away, and she stands before him not just as the heart of the performance, but as the heart of this alliance. "You... " He repeats, unable to find the words to express the tumult of emotions within him. His heart swells with pride and something else... something unfamiliar, something warm. "Meiyi..." He murmurs her name, the sound of it a benediction upon his lips. "You have surpassed all expectations." The applause erupts around them, but his gaze remains fixed on her, the one person in this grand hall who truly understands the depth of their shared journey. As she sees his surprised, one lacks of anger, expression, it gives her more confidence to let herself be free. The song reaches the Peking Opera part as her voice raises into a high-pitched tone. ‘Autumn scenery reflected in the blue waves on the river. The hills are bathed in the Sun. The grass of the shore seems to be merciless.’ Her right hand flutters down as a gesture toward the river, then her left hand raises to present the sun. She then tilts her body backward as if falling, and two dancers gently push her to bounce back up from behind. ‘Every night unless it is a good dream to stay asleep. Don't lean alone when the moon shines on a building. Take the wine to wash your heart. But all turns into tears of loinging.’ Her voice rings up as the last part before the chorus. Having already prepared long strips of silk under both of her sleeves, she flings them up and lets them flutter down like a red waterfall. The grand finale of the performance unfolds with Meiyi's haunting aria, and not a soul in the hall dares to interrupt the spell she has woven. Each guest is transfixed by her poignant portrayal of the maiden's plight, their eyes glued to her every move. Emperor Yin, seated at the head of the hall, watches in silent amazement. His chest swells with an unfamiliar emotion… pride, tinged with something softer, something he has never allowed himself to feel before. The room seems to shrink, the opulent decorations fading to the periphery as Meiyi's performance becomes the center of the universe. Her voice, a siren's call, weaves through the air, resonating with every heart present. The sound of the silk strips fluttering down like crimson petals can be heard mixing with the music, a gentle reminder that this moment of enchantment is real. It is a testament to Meiyi's unparalleled charm and grace under pressure, a silent acknowledgment of her importance to the Emperor and the future of their alliance. And in that moment, it is clear that she has not only won over the delegation but has also captured the heart of the cold Emperor Yin. With fluttering silk strips attached to her sleeves, she follows the music with graceful movements. Sometimes the silk flies past under some male guests' chins like a playful caress and quickly retreats. However, her eyes remain on Yin most of the time, as if this performance is solely for him. ‘Crying with a handkerchief, tears come out. Thinking of your iron heart, I have shed a lot of tears. Thought slowly, slow resentment, how long will it be.’ Taking the wine bottle once again, one of her hands lifts the small cup up while the other tilts the bottle over her head to pour the liquid skillfully. She then throws the bottle to one of the dancers, who quickly catches it, and a strip of red cloth flutters down for her to catch so it can lift her toward the ceiling. 'Half of the faith in exchange for half of the sadness. A cup of wine, give advice for juniors to stay. The drunken beauty in front, the excitement in your heart. Can't end love, can't manage chaotic thoughts.' As everyone's eyes are on her, she swings the rope toward Yin's table, then flicks one of the silk strips from her sleeve to wrap around the ceiling so she will not be pulled back. Hanging there with a gentle smile, she gives him the wine cup before ending the song. 'Only wine can anesthetize me.' As Meiyi gracefully flutters down from the ceiling, the room erupts in a thunderous applause. The energy in the hall shifts, the tension dissipating like mist under the sun. Emperor Yin’s own hands come together, the claps echoing the rhythm of his racing heart. As the applause dies down, he rises from his seat, his eyes never leaving hers. "Meiyi," Yin calls out, the sound of her name feeling strange and yet so right on his lips "Your performance was... extraordinary." The emperor’s words are met with a sea of nods and murmurs of agreement from the guests. Her eyes, so vivid and alive, seem to be asking him something. Is it for praise? Reassurance? Yin realizes he cannot give her either. Not here, not now. "We shall speak more of this later," He adds, the promise clear in his tone. "For now," He gestures to Lady Li and Lord Zhou, "Let us toast to the unbreakable bond between our nations." The clinking of glasses rings out once more, the sound of unity and new beginnings. The banquet begins anew, but it is the performance that remains etched in the minds of all who were fortunate enough to witness it. /- A part of my RP from long ago Song: 苏慕遮 - 张晓棠
