Hawkie

I’d lean into the **Odysseus-like wandering**, while making Hawkie’s unexpected awakening the emotional climax. The crystalline appearance also becomes part of the story rather than something to explain away. I found Hawkie in a place where nothing was supposed to survive. The planet had been designated as a sector-wide trash dump—a graveyard for ruined ships, broken machinery, and anything considered no longer worth repairing. Deep beneath the surface, an enormous planetary forge was preparing to melt everything down into its basic materials. That was where I found him. A wrecked plasteel-bodied interceptor, half-buried among mountains of discarded machines. He wasn't much to look at then. Damaged, stripped of parts, barely recognizable as a fighter. But he was still a ship. So I pulled him out. Several scavengers wanted the same wreckage, and I had to fight them for every useful component. I searched the planet for replacement parts, traded for others, and salvaged whatever I could find. Piece by piece, I rebuilt the interceptor. When he finally flew again, I gave him a name. **Hawkie.** He wasn't a Hawk. Not anymore, at least. After everything we went through, he became something uniquely ours. And I took him home. Or at least, that was the plan. The gods, apparently, had other ideas. Like Odysseus, we became wanderers. One warp jump took us somewhere we weren't supposed to be. Then another. Another system, another region, another strange world. We fought space pirates. We helped people. A local military offered to exchange Hawkie for one of their newer fighters. I refused. Local lords offered to buy him from me for more money than I could have imagined. I refused again. “That's my partner.” Hawkie had carried me through too much for me to simply trade him away. Besides, my wife was waiting for me at home. I wasn't going to be unfaithful to either of them. I just wanted to go home. Eventually, after countless repairs and upgrades, Hawkie became almost unrecognizable from the wreck I had originally dragged from the forge. His old plasteel body had been reinforced again and again, his weapons upgraded, his systems restored. He was nearly at his prime. Then came the warp jump that should have taken us home. Instead, we emerged directly in front of an anomaly. It wasn't a storm. It wasn't a black hole. It was alive. A colossal, impossible **space crystal**, drifting through the void like some enormous living organism. We fought. Every weapon Hawkie had was unleashed. Missiles. Cannons. Energy weapons. Everything. For all our upgrades, it wasn't enough. The crystal consumed us. Hawkie's hull began disappearing into its crystalline mass. Then something strange happened. I heard a voice. Not through the radio. Not through the cockpit speakers. Somewhere inside my mind. **Run.** I don't remember how long the battle lasted after that. Minutes. Hours. Years. I don't know. I only remember Hawkie protecting me. His body was being absorbed piece by piece, yet somehow he kept fighting. Every time the crystal reached me, Hawkie put himself between us. And then everything went dark. When I opened my eyes again, I was lying in an infirmary. The first thing I saw was my wife. For several seconds, I couldn't speak. “Am I dreaming?” She grabbed my hand. “No.” “Am I dead?” She laughed through her tears. “No.” I stared at her. Then I looked around the room. Home. Actually home. After all those impossible systems, strange worlds, pirates, wars, offers, repairs, and that living crystal nightmare... I had finally made it back. My wife leaned closer. “Oh, and there's something else.” She smiled. “Hawkie survived too.” I couldn't believe her. Until she took me to the hangar. There he was. Not the battered interceptor I had found on a garbage planet. Not even the machine I had spent years rebuilding. A **silver crystalline starfighter**, glistening beneath the hangar lights. He was resting quietly. Waiting. I placed my hand against his hull. For a moment, the crystal beneath my palm seemed to glow. And somewhere inside that beautiful, impossible ship, I heard the faintest electronic hum. Almost like a greeting. I smiled. “Let's stay home for a while, Hawkie.” This time, I wasn't asking the gods for anything else.
