On the left, a girl with tousled chestnut hair in low wind-whipped tails sits perched atop a battered, rust-flaked safety railing, her knuckles firmly gripping the cork handle of a curved fishing rod that extends into the foreground. Her eyes are rounded in ecstatic shock and her mouth falls wide open in a jubilant laugh, cheeks flushed bright pink beneath a dusting of freckles as she looks down toward her catch. Leaning closely over her shoulder, her companion—a girl with shaggy slate-blue hair and a smear of dark mechanical grease across her cheekbone—presses her chest against her friend’s back, pointing eagerly with one finger while grinning with incandescent delight. Directly at the bottom edge of the frame, the taut monofilament line strains under heavy tension, suspending a waterlogged, shredded rubber tire freshly hauled from the deep, shedding cold sea-spray droplets that bead and scatter in midair. Immediately behind them on the rusted diamond-plate platform, the blurred midground reveals the skeletal chassis of their half-built scrap automobile, cobbled together from welded girders and mismatched sheet metal. In the background, the corroded gantries, exposed pipes, and crumbling concrete towers of an offshore rig rise above the churning steel-gray ocean under a heavy, overcast autumn sky. Diffuse coastal daylight catches the frayed edges of the cream-colored cable-knit sweater and mustard-yellow work layers, harmonizing faded rust, olive greens, and warm wool with the desolate maritime backdrop. Scrappy optimism.
