Mecha Musumaid: Preparing Dinner Is... Easy?

"Your first assignment is dinner," the head butler explained, cautiously leading the towering mechanical maid into the mansion's luxurious kitchen. "Nothing extravagant. A roasted chicken, some vegetables, soup, and a suitable dessert. Please follow the recipes, and be careful with the equipment." The maid stood at attention. Her enormous mechanical gauntlets clicked together, while tiny sparks danced around her armored knuckles. "Understood, sir! Preparing dinner is... easy?" She tilted her head. "Of course! I shall prepare a meal worthy of this magnificent household!" The butler smiled nervously. "Excellent. I'll leave you to it." The kitchen door closed. For precisely three seconds, everything was peaceful. Then the maid examined the stove. "Hmm. The recipe says to preheat the pan." A mechanical finger extended toward the temperature controls. Its tip was approximately the size of a wine bottle. "Preheating... initiated!" **FWOOM!** A jet of flame erupted from her improvised flamethrower attachment, engulfing the frying pan in a spectacular orange blaze. "Oh! Wonderful! The pan is certainly hot now!" She dropped the chicken into it. The resulting explosion of grease nearly reached the ceiling. "Ah. Perhaps the heat was a little excessive." Undeterred, she moved on to seasoning the soup. The recipe called for a pinch of pepper. She retrieved a cylindrical canister from her utility compartment. *CLICK. HISS.* A small metal grenade landed neatly in her palm. "Pepper. A pinch of pepper..." She tossed it into the pot. **BOOM!** A dark cloud of seasoning erupted across the kitchen. Pepper dust filled the air, spice containers ricocheted off the cabinets, and a heroic quantity of soup splashed onto the ceiling. The maid blinked through the haze. "...Perhaps I misunderstood the measurement." She consulted the recipe again. *One pinch of salt.* Her mechanical fingers carefully opened a seasoning canister. *One pinch.* She looked at the enormous gauntlet. She looked at the tiny canister. She looked back at the recipe. "Ah. A precision problem!" A small rotary mechanism unfolded from her wrist. Several seconds later, salt was raining across the kitchen like winter snowfall. "Perfect!" The vegetables were next. She activated a built-in rotary cutter. The carrots became immaculate little cubes. The potatoes became immaculate little cubes. The cutting board became immaculate little cubes. She stared at the remains of the cutting board. "...The vegetables are excellent, at least." By the time the butler returned, the kitchen had become a battlefield. Smoke drifted beneath the ceiling. Every pot was either boiling furiously or smoking ominously. The roasted chicken had achieved a geological degree of carbonization, and the soup was bubbling inside a crater in the stovetop. In the center of the devastation stood the maid, holding a serving platter with both enormous mechanical hands. On it lay something brown, black, and faintly glowing. "Sir! Dinner is ready!" The butler stared. The maid smiled proudly. "I followed every instruction in the recipe. I even improved the cooking speed by approximately ninety-seven percent!" "...And the kitchen?" She glanced around. "Requires minor repairs." A ceiling light fell into the soup. *Plop.* The maid considered it for a moment. "Would you like me to prepare tea while we wait?" The butler slowly closed his eyes. "No. Absolutely not." Her shoulders drooped. "But, sir..." "**Put. The. Flamethrower. Away.**" "Yes, sir!" The mechanical weapon retracted with a satisfying metallic clunk. The maid brightened again. "Then I shall order dinner from the restaurant!" The butler paused. For the first time that afternoon, she had suggested something genuinely sensible. "...Yes. Please do that." "Certainly!" She reached for her communication console. Unfortunately, the same oversized gauntlet that had obliterated the cutting board was now operating a delicate touchscreen. *CRUNCH.* The console went dark. The maid stared at it. The butler stared at her. She offered him a cheerful, apologetic smile. "...Would you believe me if I said I could repair it?" From somewhere deep inside the mansion came a long, exhausted sigh. Dinner, it seemed, would be a learning experience. **For everyone.** :::
