His knees are planted on the cold steel floor with his weight settled back onto his heels, both black boots flat behind him, his twin tails dragging loosely on the ground to his left and curling at the tips. His belly is enormous, a taut spherical mass that swells out from his middle and rolls forward over his thighs until it nearly reaches the floor; it is so large that its upper curve rises in front of his chest and closes off the lower half of his face, so that only his eyes, brows and the top of his muzzle are visible over the crest of it. Both of his white-gloved hands are pressed flat against the underside of the belly, fingers spread, bracing its weight. His face above the belly is deeply, evenly flushed a hot red from hairline to muzzle. In each eye sits a black spiral, a continuous line winding inward with regular tightening turns toward a central point, so his pupils are gone and the spirals read as the whole of his stare. His lids are heavy and half lowered, one brow slightly higher than the other, his mouth hangs open above the belly's curve with a slow string of drool running from the corner of the lip down onto the taut fur, and a second thinner strand bridging to his chin. His ears are loose and canted outward to the sides. He is not looking at anything in the room; the spirals aim softly off into the middle distance, inward-turned and blissful. The swollen belly's surface is completely closed and unbroken fur; nothing and nobody inside it is visible. Instead the skin bulges out in hard, sudden pushes: a broad hand-shaped stretch ramming outward from deep within the left side, the fur around it pulled drum-tight and glossy, then a second ridge shoving up near the top as the struggling shape inside changes direction. Fine motion lines radiate from each pushing point and the taut surface trembles between the blows, a sharp deformed crease appearing and then relaxing. Tails' brows lift faintly at each impact and his open mouth widens a little more, pleased rather than pained. Above his head, big melted green lettering hangs in the air coming from his mouth — "BOOUUURPPP" in fat rounded comic letters, the paint sagging and dripping downward in long glossy runs, glowing sickly green, the first letters larger and the last ones trailing off and drooping. Around and behind it, several melted green hearts float upward from his shoulders and the crown of the belly, their wax-like edges softening and dripping at the bottom. The laboratory: seamless brushed steel walls with riveted panel seams, a wall of glass-fronted cabinets and racks of test tubes and beakers behind him, a pale mint-green light strip running along the ceiling and a bank of instrument panels on the right with small blinking indicator dots. Bottles and flasks on the counters reflect a green spill on their curved glass. The main light comes from above and slightly in front, a cool fluorescent wash that strikes the top of the belly and the crest of his face and leaves the underside of the belly and the floor beneath his knees in a deep soft shadow; the green letters and hearts add their own local glow, tinting the fur under his chin and the nearest steel panel. Where the belly presses toward the floor, its shadow pools tight beneath it. Palette: orange fur, white fur, hot red blush, acid green lettering and hearts, cool steel grey and pale mint around them. A single droplet at the end of the drool string catches the light and stretches before it falls. Overstuffed, giddy.
