Her head tilts down and slightly back, jaw dropped, upper teeth resting on the next row of kernels, lips drawn back in a genuine open smile that pushes her cheeks up and half-closes her eyes, brows raised a touch, gaze fixed on the cob itself rather than the viewer. A yellow kernel is caught in the fibers of her hair beside her cheek. Behind her, the trunk of a broad old tree fills the upper left of the frame, its bark deeply furrowed and glistening where a thin film of morning damp still clings, and its canopy is a gold and russet mass that thins toward the top of the shot; fallen leaves are strewn across the plank table in drifts against the grain and scattered in a ring around the bench legs, and a few leaves are still turning in the air on their way down, tilted on edge as they fall. The only light is low sun breaking through the canopy from the upper right, so it strikes the top of her hair, the bridge of her nose, the bitten face of the corn and the upward-facing leaves on the table, while the underside of her chin, the hollow of her collar and the ground beneath the bench sink into cool brown shadow; long lattice shadows of branches and leaves lie across the tabletop and across the green of her dress. Palette: forest green velvet, chestnut brown, the gold-amber-russet of the leaves, the yellow of the corn, and cool shadow browns, nothing else admitted. Warm, contented autumn afternoon.
