Military vehicles are scattered among them — two tanks slewed and burning with their hatches thrown open, an armored personnel carrier tipped onto its side, a fuel truck ruptured and jetting flame. MT weapons stalk and swerve between the wrecks on their own legs and tracks, one of them knocked onto its back and still firing upward, another pivoting to bring its barrel around. Small infantry figures swarm everywhere, swarms of them sprinting past the burning tank, dropping flat behind a concrete block, dragging a wounded man by the shoulders, a few breaking toward the frame edge with their rifles held low — their smallness is the measure of the machines. Every visible face that can be read is turned toward the two Next ACs. Muzzle flashes stud the ground with brief bright points; shells arc in from off-frame and burst against the far wall, throwing up geysers of rubble. The sky is a flat overcast ceiling of grey cloud, no sun, so the light is low and diffuse and the only strong source is the fire itself — a warm orange key from the burning fuel truck and the hangar mouth that rims one side of both Next ACs in orange, lights the smoke from below, and leaves the opposite sides of every machine in heavy cool shadow. Smoke banks across the middle distance in layered grey and black, flattening depth behind the wrecks. The palette holds to gunmetal grey, scorched rust brown, dirty concrete, and the fire's orange and yellow, with the Primal Armor's pale blue-white shell the single cool light in the frame. Ash and embers drift sideways through the air on the blast wind. Catastrophic, deafening.
