Eight or nine of them, translucent and softly luminous, their pale bodies letting the warm lantern light through and the weave of the tatami faintly visible beneath them, crowd around a low black-lacquered table. Each wears a white kimono and the small white triangular headband at the brow; their long black hair hangs loose and drifts as if underwater, lifting and settling in a slow current that has nothing to do with the air. Not one of them touches the floor with any weight — their knees hover a hand's breadth above the mats, the cushions beneath them pressed into soft hollows by nothing at all. At the table's centre a big illustrated game board lies open, bright with winding paths and hand-painted panels in vermilion, teal and gold, and the game is at its loudest. One ghost at the left edge leans so far over the board that her hair sweeps flat across the painted panels; her sleeve-draped arm is stretched out to its full length, a single white token pinched delicately between two fingertips, hesitating over the last square of the path. Directly opposite, a smaller round-faced ghost has both arms flung up above the headdress, mouth open in a delighted shout, the die still spinning in the air above the table where it left the hand. A third is sprawled backwards, propped on one elbow, laughing with eyes squeezed shut; a fourth hunches over a fan of cards, brow furrowed, chewing nothing at all. The rest press in behind them — faces crowding shoulder to shoulder at the table's edge, chins propped on hands, one craning over another's hair — every pair of eyes fixed on the board or on the thrown die, and every face lit from below by the board's own colours. The room is the inn and stays the inn: shoji screens slide open on one side onto a dark corridor, folded futons and a lacquered pillow stacked ready in the alcove, a kettle and stacked teacups pushed to the corner of the mats, a standing paper lantern with a brush-written inn name on its flank. The lantern and the andon lamp together are the only light; they throw a pool of amber across the table and the crowded ghosts, and beyond that pool the corners of the room fall into a deep and total dark. Shadows on the tatami are faint and diffused where the ghosts hang above them. Warm ochre, vermilion and soft spectral blue-white against the shadow — the palette of a late night that has gone on too long and should have ended hours ago. Raucous, cozy, breathless.
