A wide-angle theater interior seen from a high vantage, so that rows of red seats descend in receding rows toward the large pink screen at the far end: the screen glows a pink-magenta, with a huge pale pink strand of hair and the outline of a face cut off at the top and sides, fixed to the center of the far wall, red curtains and square wall speakers framing it on both sides, and the room otherwise sinks into dark navy and black. Along the center row, a girl with long wavy dark-blue hair, round thin-rimmed glasses and tan skin stands facing the viewer and leans forward over a seat back, both hands gripping its top edge, her mouth open in a wide laughing grin showing teeth, her eyes bright behind the glasses, long hair spilling forward over her shoulders; she wears a black buttoned dress or blazer with a brown corset-style band at the waist, a red ribbon at the neck and a low neckline, her black sleeves hanging over her hands on the seat. At the far right a small figure with the same long blue hair and a black dress with black stockings stands on top of the seats with both arms stretched out wide, caught mid-dance with her hair flying sideways; at the far left of the stage side, another small figure with long hair stands or runs on the seat backs near the wall; between them the audience is a scatter of rumpled blue-haired heads seen from behind in the seats, row after row, and one strawberry-blonde twintailed head sits in the middle rows at the right of center, her pigtails spread over the seat backs. In the lower right foreground, a close three-quarter face of the same blue-haired, round-glasses girl looks back over her shoulder at the viewer with a tear running down her cheek, her brows drawn together, her expression sad and a little smiling, the highest-detail face in the frame, large and darker than the central figure, nearest the lens. In the lower left foreground, the head of a half-black, half-white bear fills the corner, one eye a glowing red slit and the other a blue eye, its wide grin showing its teeth, its paws resting on the seat back, its face tilted toward the central girl. Two vertical lines of white Japanese text with black outlines run down the frame in handwritten pop lettering: the right column reads "どうですか?視聴者さん!" and the left column, in two parallel lines, reads "ダンガンロンパはおもろかったか?楽しそうでなによりです!" — both sitting on the dark wall space at either side of the screen, never over the central girl’s face. Light comes from the pink screen at the far end and a cool overhead glow, striking the tops of the seats, the central girl’s face and hands and the bear’s face, while the shadow side and the rows farther back fall into deep blue-black; the red of the seats is the most saturated element, repeating row on row, near rows fully structured with seams, armrests and curved backs, far rows simplified but keeping the unit rhythm. The whole frame carries a retro screen-capture degradation: thin vertical scanlines across the image, mild chromatic aberration at the edges of the figures, crushed blacks, grain, and black bars at the top and bottom edges. Uncanny, theatrical,
Mizuki
