The camera sits slightly above her and close in, looking down into the dark of a small room; the frame is a tight close-up so her crouched body fills the lower two thirds and the open refrigerator cuts in from the left. She is down on her heels in a squat, weight settled on the balls of both feet, knees drawn up and apart, her chest pressed forward against the fabric of her buttoned top as she twists her upper body back towards the lens — the turn is a hard spiral through the waist, shoulders swung round, hip staying square to the fridge. Her left hand is clamped on the refrigerator door handle, the door pulled wide and held at an angle so its inner shelf edge catches the light; her right hand is lifted close to her chest, fingers curled round a fist-sized chunk of pink ham with a cut face showing grain and a damp shine. Her head is turned right back over her shoulder, chin near the shoulder line, eyes wide open and fixed straight at the viewer, pupils small, whites showing all round, lips parted in a caught gasp; a hot blush stains both cheeks and the tips of her ears. Tanuki ears stand up out of her aqua hair, one flicked back, the other forward, and her long side ponytail with its flower and X-shaped clip swings forward past her shoulder with the turn; the tanuki tail, thick and banded, curls up behind her hip under the fridge glow, its rings catching a thin edge. Hair falls over one eye but does not hide it — the visible eye is what carries the shock.
She is lit by one source only: a flashlight held from the viewer's side, so the beam comes towards her down the camera axis, a hard-edged oval of cold white light landing on her face, her collar and the ham, hot-spotting the bridge of her nose, her raised knuckles, and the fridge door's metal lip, and throwing her own shadow up the wall behind her. The beam also makes a second revealer of the fridge's interior: the inside of the door and the shelf behind her are soaked in a sickly warm yellow light that underlights her jaw and the underside of her chest, so she reads as a girl pinched between cold white from the front and warm yellow from the side. Beyond those two pools the room is nearly black — a bare wall, a shadowed corner, the blurred outline of a counter, nothing that competes. Palette: deep blue-black for the room, cold white for the torch, warm amber for the fridge, her aqua hair and green eyes the one cool accent, the ham's pink the small warm one. The whole image hangs on the half-second of a raid — caught, cornered, absurdly holding the ham. Startled, tense.
